English: Cilgerran slate quarry This was Cilgerran's main industry for a hundred years until 1938. The workings are deep in the gorge right next to the river which eventually became impassable for larger boats owing to the debris. Slate from here was used not only for roofing but for gravestone, flagstones, windowsills, hearths and billiard tables.
