Notes Using a muted yellowish-brown palette Heem arranged smoker paraphernalia among a lobster, lemons and different vessels. Although the scene is in itself static, a temporal element is introduced by the glowing embers or the bread on the left with a bite taken from it. They point to the presence of a person. In his selection of objects the artist might allude to so-called "tobacco drinking," as smoking was initially called, its effect was described as "dry drunkenness" in analogy to alcohol.
