Konrad Koch geb. 13.02.1846 gest. 13.04.1911 Im Herbst 1874 wurde an dieser Stelle, einem Teil des ehemaligen Kleinen Exerzierplatzes, von Schülern des Martino-Katharineums unter der Leitung ihrer Lehrer Dr. Konrad Koch und August Hermann erstmalig im Gebiet des damaligen Deutschen Reiches ein Fußballspiel ausgetragen. Dr. Konrad Koch war Gymnasiallehrer am Martino-Katharineum Braunschweig. Er unterrichtete die Fächer Alte Sprachen und Deutsch. Bereits früh erkannte er jedoch die Bedeutung sportlicher Aktivitäten der Schüler im Freien. 1872 führte Dr. Koch daher Schulspiele als Ergänzung des Turnunterrichtes an diesem Gymnasium ein. Unterstützung erfuhr er dabei von seinem Kollegen August Hermann (1835–1906), der seit 1869 als Turnlehrer am Martino-Katharineum tätig war. Hermann beschaffte aus England einen originalen Fußball und schuf damit die Voraussetzung dafür, dass 1874 in Deutschland erstmalig im Unterricht „Fußball“ gespielt wurde. Ein Jahr später legte Dr. Koch die ersten deutschen Fußballregeln vor und gründete in demselben Jahr den ersten Schüler-Fußballverein an seinem Gymnasium. Durch den Aufsatz „Über den erzieherischen Wert der Schulspiele“ (1878) und zahlreiche weitere Veröffentlichungen wurde Dr. Koch zum Begründer der Spielbewegung in den deutschsprachigen Ländern und ein grundlegender Theoretiker der Leibesübung in Deutschland. Von der Vielzahl der durch Dr. Koch und August Hermann eingeführten Spiele, so z. B. Raffball – ein Vorläufer des Handballspieles – im Jahre 1891 und dem vor allem für Mädchen als Gegenstück zum Fußball gedachten Basketballspiel im Jahre 1896, hat keines einen so großen Anklang gefunden wie das Fußballspiel. Beide Pädagogen waren neben ihrer beruflichen und wissenschaftlichen Tätigkeit in ihrer Heimatstadt Braunschweig kulturell und gesellschaftlich engagiert und gehörten zum Freundeskreis des Braunschweiger Schriftstellers Wilhelm Raabe. |
