    Scholar, author, journalist, and historian. Born 31 March 1884 in a house on this site, Lipa, Batangas, son of Valerio Kalaw and Maria Manguiat. Editor, El Renacimiento, 1907–1909; one of the defendants in the libel suit against El Renacimiento, 1902–1912; Member, Philippine Assembly, 1910–1913; Secretary, Philippine Assembly, 1913–1916; Director, National Library, 1916–1917; and 1929–1939; Secretary of the Interior, 1920–1922; Executive Secretary and Chief Adviser of the Commission on Independence, 1923–1925; First President Philippine Chapter, Academia Hispano–Americana de Cadiz, 1925. Author of HACIA LA TIERRA DEL CZAR, CINCO REGLAS DE NUESTRA MORAL ANTIGUA, THE PHILIPPINE REVOLUTION, LA CONSTITUCION DE MALOLOS LA MASONERIA FILIPINA, etc. Married to Pura Villanueva. Died in Manila, 4 December 1940. (English)
