Nature of the element

[edit]

Comics were said to be a literary genre (Q223393). No serious publication on comics would affirm that nowadays. Comics are considered either as an art (Q735) or as media (Q340169). Kokonino (talk) 19:23, 10 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Ok. I added visual artwork (Q4502142) as a superclass (so now both the artistic and the narrative features of comics are considered) and that itself is an art genre. - Valentina.Anitnelav (talk) 06:25, 11 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Someone had again added literary genre (Q223393). I changed it for form of art (Q5489026), which is wider and more coherent with current scholarship. Kokonino (talk) 19:26, 8 August 2018 (UTC) @Kokonino: @Valentina.Anitnelav: narrative (Q1318295) is a literary genre (Q223393), and comics (Q1004) is a subclass of narrative (Q1318295), so comics (Q1004) should also be a literary genre (Q223393) ? Am I wrong ? CaLéValab (talk) 17:48, 25 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@CaLéValab: There are very wide definitions of literature that would consider oral tales and even films as literature. From this perspective it would be valid to call comics literature (and comic a literary form). But from a narrower perspective - seeing literature as something written - it would be false. In any case I think it is not correct to say that narrative (Q1318295) is a literary genre - I would require references for these statements. Comic could be considered a literary form (with the first definition in mind) but certainly not a literary genre. @Kokonino: can you please have a look at this item, again and change instance-of statements as you see fit? - Valentina.Anitnelav (talk) 18:47, 25 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It seems that there is the need to do some clean-up with narrative (Q1318295) - sometimes it is used as a genre where probably tale (Q17991521) (French conte), Erzählung (Q27036528) (German Erzählung), short novel (Q12799318) (Russian povest) or narration (Q3328821) would be better suited. There is also still some mix up between literary forms and genres as the property form of creative work (P7937) is rather new. There does also seem to exist some inconsistent use that may be rooted in different conceptions of a genre - in some languages/cultures/literary traditions it seems to be correct to call "novel" a genre (at least I heard so), in others it is not. - Valentina.Anitnelav (talk) 19:12, 25 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
