Wikidata:WikiProject Roads/United States/Guidelines

This page will describe the implementation of the proposed Wikidata guidelines on labels, descriptions, and aliases; as it pertains to highways and other roads in the United States.

To discuss this proposal, see the talk page.

Unless otherwise noted, these standards refer to the English language. Proposals for other languages are welcome too.

Labels

[edit]
This applies to all languages.

Labels should be the same as the article titles, without any parts in parentheses. These are the same as those generated by the slurpInterwiki tool.

Descriptions

[edit]

National-level highway articles

[edit]
This includes national summary articles on Interstates and U.S. Routes

National summary items for Interstates and U.S. Routes should have the description "highway in the United States", with the following exception:

  • If the route is only in two states, the description may instead read "highway in <state 1> and <state 2>"

State-level highway articles

[edit]
This includes state highways and state-level articles on Interstates and U.S. Routes, as well as three-digit Interstates.

Most signed highways at the state level should have the description "highway in <state>"

Former highways

[edit]

Formerly signed highways should have the same description as a current highway would, with the word "former" included. For example, "former highway in Texas".

Exceptions

[edit]

Exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis. And remember, be bold!

Aliases

[edit]

Aliases should include the official name of the highway (as determined by the designating authority) and official abbreviation (as seen on w:en:Template:Jct), as well as any names that apply to either the entire route, or are widely associated with the route.

For example:

  • California State Route 1 would have the following aliases:
    • State Route 1 (official name)
    • SR 1 (official abbreviation)
    • Pacific Coast Highway (widely associated with the route)
  • Interstate 10 would have the following aliases:
    • I-10 (official abbreviation)
    • Interstate Highway 10 (widely used alias)
    • but not Pearl Harbor Memorial Highway (this would be better suited for Interstate 10 in Arizona)

Again, exceptions apply!
