Unexpected increase in byte size[edit]

Not exactly a technical problem, I guess... I was just curious, why do some minor edits make the item increase so much in byte size? As an example, this minor edit caused the item to increase 2130 bytes in size. Would love to understand the logic behind this. —capmo (talk) 04:31, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Capmo: See Help:FAQ#Editing #13; it mostly happens when editing very old revisions (in the case you linked, the last edit was almost ten years ago). Lucas Werkmeister (WMDE) (talk) 08:15, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Danke schön, Herr Werkmeister! Things are much clearer now. Knowing that data is stored in json format explains a lot. Regards, —capmo (talk) 15:07, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Saludos —capmo (talk) 20:54, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Possible problems from exceeding 2^31 edits[edit]

We are getting really close to this limit. I looked around in archives and on Phabricator and even if the main database can handle it, there might be third party tools that need patching within the next few weeks when this is reached. Something to monitor closely. 77.103.193.166 07:32, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

For the record, the main task about this is T63111, and we’re tracking relevant values on Wikidata in particular on Grafana; you can see there that the recentchanges, cu_changes (cu = CheckUser) and text tables all crossed 50% already, and I didn’t hear reports of breakage about those. Lucas Werkmeister (WMDE) (talk) 09:10, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
(Minor correction: in fact the cu_changes.cuc_id is currently being made 64-bit, see T355609. That’s why its line in the Grafana dashboard cuts off ~2 weeks ago.) Lucas Werkmeister (WMDE) (talk) 10:34, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Item not searchable by initial part of Label or its alias[edit]

@Kimeerat brought to my attention a problem with a newly created data item. For Q125918173, the item is not searchable by the initial words or prompted when typing the Label or alias in the search box. I tried to remove and add alias, and added label in Telugu to try to solve the issue, but failed. Arjunaraoc (talk) 00:20, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Added this issue at Wikidata:Report_a_technical_problem/WDQS_and_Search#Item_not_searchable_by_initial_part_of_Label_or_its_alias as it is more relevant page. Arjunaraoc (talk) 05:14, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Testing reveals issue in EntitySchema extension[edit]

Hello. I just finished preliminary testing on an AbuseFilter. ABF 258 on Wikidata, but ABF 24 on test.wikidata.org. As the title suggests it was designed to prevent unconfirmed users from creating new EntitySchemas. The result I got when I tried to create an EntitySchema was an error message saying "Internal Error. Runtime Exception.". The expected behaviour was an message telling me the action was forbidden. Disabling the abusefilter on test.wikidata.org allowed the unconfirmed user to create an entityschema. Reporting this here as "The Wikidata team" is listed as contact for the EntitySchema extension.

Note that this filter is currently active on Wikidata. The log suggests the filter had one positive match. I'm assuming this user got a very confusing error message. Infrastruktur (talk) 20:33, 19 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Mobile editing inconvenient[edit]

Hello, for health reasons I can edit only from a smartphone, holding it close to my eyes, but the desktop view of Wikidata individual pages is very inconvenient because unlike Wikipedia and Wiktionary it doesn't show single column layout with font large enough for poor eyesight while in mobile view it doesn't show properties editing interface. Is someone working on fully mobile compatible editing interface for Wikidata? GregZak (talk) 03:02, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
