Motivation

[edit]

WikiProject LGBT has more than 50 participants and couldn't be pinged. Please post on the WikiProject's talk page instead.

The website is a important source of information regarding queer people in STEM, and would be used to populate red lists for various projects and edit-a-thons around the topics. While it will be too late for various LGBT+ events in June (at least in 2020, unless we collectively cancel the year), there is always Science Week around the globes at different time of the year. For example, in France, that's around October, so having the information ready by then could help projects.

This is also important so we can make sure that we report proper first name and pronoun for trans/nb people. While investigating my CSV dump, I did found that Charlie J. Hadley (Q57979384) was using a wrong first name and no pronoun, and given there is proposal floating around "abstract wikipedia", I do think it is important to get that part right.

I already scraped the website, and based on Openrefine matching and manual verification, I think we could link 20% to 25% of the database (since not everybody use a complete name, not all ORCID ID are in WD, and not everybody give enough information to correlate with the item). I am planning on adding a Mix'n'match (Q28054658) catalog once the property is created. Misc (talk) 10:18, 15 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion

[edit]
There is already a constraint that requires to add a ref. At the same time, we do not have one for sex or gender (P21), and pronouns are usually infered from that in most languages (except the ones without grammatical gender, and the one where "it is complicated" like Japanese), so I am not sure what is the concern exactly. And in English, it would seems logical that a item without any information entered would be best described by using gender-neutral pronoun (Q1189745), because that's neutral (by definition). --Misc (talk) 12:45, 16 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
