Motivation
[edit]Documents published by the European Parliament are relevant sources for many figures. However, these documents may be very difficult to find on the registry of the Parliament. It would be very useful to be able to enter the PE number in order to facilitate the identification of these references. – The preceding unsigned comment was added by Julius Schwarz (talk • contribs) at 12:41, September 24, 2024 (UTC).
Discussion
[edit]- Hi - why are your property labels (like "external ID of source for public funding entitlement for 2004") different for each example? Can the identifiers for different years overlap? I don't suppose there's a formatter URL for these? ArthurPSmith (talk) 20:01, 24 September 2024 (UTC)
- Oh I see, you're not planning these really as external identifiers for items in themselves that they are about, but as references to qualify other statements, is that it? ArthurPSmith (talk) 20:02, 24 September 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, exactly, sorry I only read this after replying to your first message. Julius Schwarz (talk) 07:09, 25 September 2024 (UTC)
- So the form of the external ID is different (PE [0-9]{3}\.[0-9]{3}), but I just wanted to highlight that the external can be used for a variety of things. Since the external ID refers to documents used as references and not as items, you can find several such ID for a single item, which is entirely normal in this case. For instance, European People's Party (Q208242) has a maximum funding entitlement *and* a final amount of funding; each value is referenced with a separate document and each document has its own external ID. I wanted to reflect that in the examples. Julius Schwarz (talk) 07:09, 25 September 2024 (UTC)
- Do you want to support this now that the proposal is clearer, @ArthurPSmith? Julius Schwarz (talk) 07:09, 1 October 2024 (UTC)

- Support Yes this seems fine to me thanks. ArthurPSmith (talk) 13:42, 1 October 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks. Much appreciated! Julius Schwarz (talk) 14:03, 1 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Julius Schwarz, ArthurPSmith: Done as European Parliament document ID (P13034) Regards, ZI Jony (Talk) 18:48, 3 October 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot! PS: I deleted the entries that were created, though, as they were using the ID as identifiers for the listed items, while these are IDs for references supporting statements. Julius Schwarz (talk) 08:22, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
- Actually, I see that there is a "+" between "PE" and the first digits, while it should be a space (see "Allowed values" above). Can this be corrected, please @ZI Jony? Julius Schwarz (talk) 08:39, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Julius Schwarz, the reason behind this is that when you put a "space" in the value it will break the URL! However, adding a "+" in the value instead of "space", will work similar to the "space". Regards, ZI Jony (Talk) 12:42, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
- Ok, point taken, then. Could we, however, put a condition or warning to ensure that the ID is used only/mostly in references? Julius Schwarz (talk) 14:48, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Julius Schwarz, that’s not necessary as we didn’t have "formatter URL" which provide direct link. I make a "search formatter URL" statement to search manually. Regards, ZI Jony (Talk) 18:07, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
- I'm not sure I understand that, sorry. What I was referring to is the warning message (I think with the lighting-looking icon) if someone uses the ID as the qualifier of an item, instead of in a reference. Does that make more sense? Julius Schwarz (talk) 18:36, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Julius Schwarz, this property can as main value, as reference, or as qualifier. I'd suggest you to set a statement Wikidata usage instructions (P2559). Regards, ZI Jony (Talk) 14:46, 5 October 2024 (UTC)
