Motivation
[edit]the IAAF (the major governing body for global track and field) will use a new world rankings system for track and field qualification into the 2020 Olympics and future world championships. the system is live right now, and all athletics meetings (current and historical) have been assigned a "competition category" viewable on the iaaf website that basically says "how competitive" a meet is using various factors such as the number of world records that have occurred at the meeting, the quality of competitors, the prestige of the competition, etc.
once a meeting is assigned a competition category, my understanding is that it will typically not be changed, even in future years. if it is changed, we can just add multiple claims with a point in time (P585) qualifier to clarify the historical categorization.
maintaining these rankings on wikidata is obviously useful for determining Olympic qualification, but it's also useful for a number of other statistical purposes, like for comparing the prestige of two meets or determining the relative worth of a performance (e.g. a win at w:Athletics at the 2016 Summer Olympics – Men's 1500 metres in 3:50.00 is more valuable than a win at the 2018 American collegiate championships in the same discipline in 3:44.77, despite a faster time at the latter event). --Habst (talk) 21:47, 4 July 2019 (UTC)

- Should datatype be item?--GZWDer (talk) 16:31, 5 July 2019 (UTC)
- hi, i didn't consider that before. i wouldn't be opposed but i don't see a benefit to the extra complication right now. if the iaaf ever decides to add a new category type, we can always change the regex, and i don't think the category identifiers would each necessarily justify their own item -- though i can guess backronyms for most of them, i don't think they have official or attested etymologies so they can't be translated, and they don't really have any significance outside of points weighting (though i suppose if the numbers are public, we could add the points weighting algorithms to the item pages). --Habst (talk) 18:13, 5 July 2019 (UTC)
- Support but not for using as a qualifier like in Example 3. If athletics at the 2016 Summer Olympics – men's 100 metres (Q25397537) has this property we should't double it as qualifier. And we shouldn't double other properties of athletics at the 2016 Summer Olympics – men's 100 metres (Q25397537) like location (P276) or Commons category (P373) too.
