Motivation

[edit]

International Electrotechnical Vocabulary (Q1667710) (IEC 60050 standard series) contains precise definitions for more than 20000 terms from electrotechnology and related areas. All entries have a label in English and French; labels exist in additional languages with varying coverage.

So far I've been linking Wikidata items using described by source (P1343) with the section, verse, paragraph, or clause (P958) qualifier (example). For sources with fewer definitions (an article, a domain specific standard or a textbook) that approach is sufficient. But for the IEV with it's huge number of terms creating an external ID property seems justified. A great benefit is that we get a link (thanks to the formatter URL (P1630)) so that we can easily and quickly check whether the Wikidata item and the IEV term are about (exactly) the same concept.

iec60050-511 is a preview document which defines the "IEV number" (that's what I propose as default property name) and in general explains the structure of the standard. http://www.electropedia.org/ can be used to look up terms. Toni 001 (talk) 09:31, 13 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
