Planned useThis property will be used by WikiTrackBot (RFP) in adding athletics results to Wikidata. Every non-final (and multi-heat final (Q54967487)) performance can potentially have a section number as a qualifier.

Motivation

Knowing heat numbers is important, because qualification to the next round is almost always based at least in part on placing in a specific heat. stage reached (P2443) is currently used to indicate the round (i.e. quarterfinals, semifinals, finals), but Wikidata lacks a numerical datatype to indicate the number in a specific round. Making hundreds of items like "Semifinal 1", "Semifinal 2", ... to be used with stage reached (P2443) doesn't really make sense and would make queries much hHabstarder.

Properties like series ordinal (P1545) can't be used for this, because heat numbers will often be used as a qualifier in an athletics performance (for example in a participant in (P1344) claim) where using series ordinal (P1545) would be confused with the final placing of the athlete (we have ranking (P1352) for that, but it would still be unintuitive to associate "series ordinal" with "section number" especially if ranking (P1352) is missing) rather than the heat number.
