Motivation[edit]
This is something comes to me when viewing Wikidata:Project_chat#Draft_for_why_we_need_new_ranks. Though I have the idea for almost one year, I have never complete a full proposal for the idea.
This property may be useful from time to time, e.g. when setting some value as "preferred", it may be a result of a community discussion. There should be a way to link the specific community discussion. reference URL (P854) is not optimal as it is strictly not a source (Wikipedia does not link community discussion in page contents either - they may add a reference of the discussion as HTML comment; but we should have a way to link a discussion with a specific statement, so that others may see the discussion before any potentially controversial change. Discussion[edit]
- Comment Isn't that what the Talk pages are for? Add links to relevant discussions there? ArthurPSmith (talk) 18:36, 7 February 2020 (UTC)
- Talk page can not make user who want to change a statement pay attention. We should have some way to let user notice (Wikidata usage instructions (P2559) may work but don't think it is optimal, as it is plain text that can not link to actual discussion). In addition this is not machine-readable data.--GZWDer (talk) 22:51, 7 February 2020 (UTC)
- One way to make others attention is place a dummy format constraint to it, but also ask user not to remove the qualifier. Qualifiers violating a constraint will automatically be expanded and will be viewable by any registered user editing the statement.--GZWDer (talk) 22:43, 13 February 2020 (UTC)
- Support for better or worse plenty of relevant discussions don't happen on talk pages but on the project chat or Wikiprojects. Having a way to reference them seems like a good idea. ChristianKl ❪✉❫ 19:19, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
- Well my thought was, if such a discussion exists, it could be linked from the Talk page on the item. But I can see how a reference/qualifier like this on specific statement could be useful. ArthurPSmith (talk) 19:58, 11 February 2020 (UTC)
- Support, great idea.--Arbnos (talk) 22:22, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
