Aim and Scope[edit]

The Vivaldi Thematic Catalog Concordance project (Q118444558) is an effort by members of the Music Library Association (MLA) Linked Data Working Group (LDWG) to create and enhance Wikidata items for all of Antonio Vivaldi's works and, further, to establish concordance functionality by adding catalog code (P528) statements for each thematic index that lists the work.

Many composers have one authoritative thematic index, which, like the catalogue raisonné of a visual artist, organizes and disambiguates the complete oeuvre of that artist. Vivaldi has several. Various musicologists have attempted the definitive catalog of Vivaldi's work, with Peter Ryom's Antonio Vivaldi. Thematisch-systematisches Verzeichnis seiner Werke, commonly known as the Ryom-Verzeichnis (RV), arguably the most authoritative of these. Others include the Fanna catalogue, Pincherle catalog, Rinaldi catalog, and the Bachmann catalog. Each catalog uses its own numbering scheme, and only some offer a concordance to other systems.

Moreover, music scholarship has resulted in ongoing changes in attribution within Vivaldi's catalog, the instrumental works in particular: for example, between the 2007 and 2018 editions of the Ryom-Verzeichnis, 17 new works were attributed to Vivaldi, while others were reclassified as spurious and moved to the appendix.[1]

Adding all available catalog code statements to Vivaldi work items in Wikidata will allow works to be searched and disambiguated across catalogs. Additionally, Qualifiers on these statements can accurately model changes in attribution and scholarship, for example by designating certain catalog numbers as "deprecated" when they are reassigned based on an updated composer attribution (while retaining searchability). Each catalog represents the state of scholarship at the point of its publication, so entering these various codes with appropriate qualifiers will allow us to record—and query—the most structured and complete version of these works' descriptive history.

In addition to catalog codes, we are adding identifiers to link items to VIAF and the Library of Congress Name Authority File and creating statements about form, tonality, and instrumentation.

Timeline[edit]

Work began in Fall 2022 with an assessment of the Vivaldi work items that already existed in Wikidata. After sorting out false positives from our SPARQL query (for example, films with soundtracks featuring Vivaldi works that had a statement of composer = Vivaldi (a possible future remediation project, if there could be a more appropriate property for designating that relationship!)), we found 74 work items that could be enhanced according to our data model (see below).

As of April 2023, we have created approximately 350 new work items. Approximately 650 items remain to be created, and work continues.

Workflow[edit]

We are creating new items based on a spreadsheet listing all of Vivaldi's works by RV number. Data validation and enhancement is done in the spreadsheet by reviewing the Ryom catalog (which lists Fanna and Pincherle numbers), Grove Music Online, LCNAF (which often lists Rinaldi as well as other catalogs as alternate access points). Once a set of works has been reviewed, Wikidata items are created in small batches with OpenRefine.

Data Model[edit]

Example items[edit]

Example item: Violin concerto in B-flat major (RV 364a)
Example item: Sonata for 2 violins in G major (RV 71)

This table currently contains properties for instrumental works. Enhanced data model for operas forthcoming.

Data model table[edit]

qualifier on composer: sourcing circumstances (P1480) attribution (Q230768), misattribution (Q105675146), former attribution (Q70918737), disputed (Q18912752), or other no If attribution to Vivaldi is incorrect or not certain (according to reference sources), add qualifier with sourcing circumstances (P1480).
form of creative work (P7937) concerto (Q9748) (or subclass), sonata (Q131269), or other appropriate form no Use the most specific value available, for example, violin concerto (Q633441) rather than concerto (Q9748).
catalog code (P528) text string no Thematic catalog number. Use prefix format that is used in the thematic catalog
qualifier on catalog code: catalog (P972) Ryom-Verzeichnis (Q209201), Fanna catalogue (Q112327835), Pincherle catalog (Q112328398), Rinaldi catalog (Q112328324), or other item no Thematic catalog
opus number (P10855) text string no Prefer using opus numbers without language-specific prefix, e.g. "2/2" instead of "op. 2, no. 2". Note that Rinaldi catalog codes include "op." but should not use this property.
qualifier on opus number: issued by (P2378) yes Publisher that assigned the opus number, if multiple opus numbers assigned for the same work
tonality (P826) C major (Q1022293), D minor (Q283903), etc. no Key of the work. Be sure to select as a value the Wikidata item representing tonality rather than a scale or chord with the same label (e.g. E major (Q1125102) rather than E major (Q58234086).
instrumentation (P870) violin (Q8355), oboe (Q8377), etc. no Add named soloists with quantity (see below). Represent standard accompaniment (designated "string orchestra" in LCNAF) as string orchestra (Q1090674) + continuo group (Q114237252).
qualifier on instrumentation: quantity (P1114) no Generally use for soloists only in concerto & sonata forms.
partially coincident with (P1382) Another Vivaldi work item yes Create reciprocal statements between works that share significant material. For example, Ryom will note when a concerto shares a movement with another work.
Library of Congress authority ID (P244) text string no LCCN for work. No spaces ("n" or "no" followed by 8-10 numbers).
VIAF ID (P214) text string no Linked from LCNAF on id.loc.gov.
on focus list of Wikimedia project (P5008) WikiProject Vivaldi Thematic Catalog Concordance (Q118444558) no Include on all items created or edited for the project.

References[edit]

Most statements should have references. References to Ryom should include a publication date (P577) to distinguish between editions. References to Grove Music Online (Q30532476) can include a reference URL (P854) or title (P1476) (of article) and date retrieved (P813). If you are editing items manually, we strongly encourage going to Preferences > Gadgets and enabling DuplicateReferences, which will add buttons to copy-paste references between statements.
