Aim and Scope[edit]

The aim of the Black Teacher Archive (BTA) WikiProject is to create linked data for the organizations, publications, K-12 schools, and education leaders represented in the BTA digital collection. Composed of nearly 1,900 items, published between 1906-1984, the collection is mainly composed of bi-monthly and monthly journals and newsletters of state and national Black educator organizations. Within the publications feature convention reports, articles on pedagogy, statistics, and community news. The creation and editing of Wikidata entries based on information in the publications and supplemented with other resources such as newspapers, dissertations, scholarly articles, and geographic databases will help to develop datasets for re-use.

The BTA is an open-access project. Through the coordination of digitization, centralizing items in a digital portal, and commitment to digital preservation of these items we aim to increase access to this body of material that is geographically scattered across institutions for research and study from any place with an internet connection. While the items in the collection were published by distinct educator associations, the membership was engaged in multiple networks, and thus the BTA believes that the project must also be an open-data project too.

We have chose the Wikidata platform to serve the project for the following reasons:

  • free platform that places data in the public domain
  • encourages collaboration to create and maintain entries
  • the defined information boxes and statement-based input, eliminates the need for editorial language
  • information is formatted as structured data format which enables machine computation
  • supports other Wikis

Background[edit]

The Black Teacher Archive (BTA) is a digital portal centralizing materials created by professional organizations of African American educators in the 20th century, historically referred to as Colored Teachers Associations (CTAs). As early as 1861, the first documented CTA was formed in Ohio, state-wide associations began to proliferate in southern states during the late nineteenth century, and in some Northern and Midwestern states during Jim Crow. Black teachers founded CTAs to enhance educational opportunities for Black children, to develop themselves as professionals, political actors, and intellectuals, as well as to organize around broader socio-political concerns in the Black Freedom Movement.

The project is based at Gutman Library, Harvard Graduate School of Education and is made possible through the generous support of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the Spencer Foundation. The BTA brings together materials physically stewarded in over 70 archival repositories across the United States. The bulk of the collection is comprised of digitized serial publications published by state educator organizations and nationally.

Goals of the Project[edit]

  • Demonstrate the network of people, spaces, and organizations that supported the intellectual, political, and professional contributions of Black teachers in the United States during Jim Crow.
  • Develop and refine entries on Wikidata using the Black Teacher Archive collection for reuse and secondary publication
  • Engage with multiple publics (scholarly, librarian, and general) to improve discovery and familiarity with digital humanities exploration of "archives as data"

The column header Value may be new entity? means "Might I need to create another Wikidata item to use this property, or should all the items I would need to refer to exist already?" For example, values for country of citizenship (P27) should be existing countries, so it is marked "no". Whereas employer (P108) might need to refer to an organization that isn't yet represented in Wikidata, so it is marked "yes".
