Aim and Scope[edit]

This page documents the participation of Texas A&M University Libraries in the PCC Wikidata Pilot.

Our specific goals are:

  • To gain familiarity with Wikidata and its tools
  • To compare the process of creating Wikidata items with our traditional process of authority control
  • To create items for persons, dissertations and related entities in Wikidata that may not have identities established for them
  • To explore the extent that the process for doing the above can be automated, and how much metadata from existing sources (repository, VIVO research information system) can be reused
  • To demonstrate the value of linked data by experimenting with Wikidata's SPARQL Query service to explore relationships among the entities we plan to create
  • To expose data about our collections and researchers on the wider web and make it more discoverable to the public

Projects[edit]

  • Faculty advisors, graduate students, and their doctoral dissertations (in the Texas A&M Mechanical Engineering Department)

Timeline[edit]

This is a yearlong project that lasts until December 2021.

Workflow[edit]

Tasks[edit]

We plan to start by manually adding and editing Wikidata items for authors of dissertations, faculty advisors, and the dissertation along with corporate bodies we may encounter.

We also plan to test how various tools can assist in the batch uploading core data elements in our application profiles for these entities. This includes using OpenRefine to upload data from our institutional repository and scholarly profiles from our VIVO instance into Wikidata. This also includes using Mix'n'Match to enhance the items further by adding information about awards, fellowships and named professorships.
