Music, People, and Companies?[edit]

Is there a particular reason these aren't included in the Format "(game|tv|movie)/[a-z0-9\-/]+"? In the archived discussion the music one was proposed and I didn't see any objections. FallingGravity (talk) 20:05, 25 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Former president Richard Nixon has a Metacritic profile. All listed appearance are post humorous and most likely just archival recordings. His scores is merely the average of the documentaries he's featuring him, says nothing about him personally. For companies (CBS, ABC) I wouldn't expect consistency over 60 years of producing under different leaderships. I think we should keep this property only to the works themselves. Dispenser: I strongly disagree with removing those. AFAIR the property was used for persons and companies long before the property was modified accordingly.

Things like Nixon or problems with companies are hardly unique to Metacritic. Uses of older recordings being listed as appearnces also happens in other film databases, too, that don't differentiate between actual appearances and archive footage. See Nixon's entries in allmovie, csfd, cinemagia, TMDb or allociné for example. The point of adding these entries to our items isn't just to get review scores.

And companies - well, that's really a general problem that goes way beyond Metacritic. Changes in company structures, name changes, changes due to mergers, sales, etc. are generally hard to keep track of and we have many external ID properties (including those specifically for companies) where the data quality for companies isn't the best, such as having several entries for the same company under different names or unintentionally mixing distinct companies. Those aren't really good reasons to simply exclude/remove all persons and companies. Moreover, adding Metacritic IDs for companies to their respective items makes it easier to identify problems and report redundant or incorrect entries to Metacritic. --Kam Solusar (talk)

WikiProject Movies has more than 50 participants and couldn't be pinged. Please post on the WikiProject's talk page instead.

The review scores is what the company and website are built for and it IS the only point for us to be adding these items. It is a catalog of reviewer rating for specific works, and not an online CV as some of these other databases. The bibliographical and other data information is pulled from AMG, IMDb, and IVA (stated on page end). Reporting bad data if not marked as spam would be reported upstream. IMO the scores aren't even it's primary purpose, it's the reviews themselves(which result in a score) that Metacritic aggregates. But the ability to pull review scores aren't the primary reason we add them to Wikidata items. We're adding these IDs to so we can match their content to specific concepts (like a concrete person, a film or a season), thereby making Metacritic contents accessible via programs/queries, for whatever purpose people want to use it for. Whether it's matching it to other IDs, to provide links to the specific Metacritic page for a topic or, yes to pull review scores if users want. But it's up to people to decide whether they want to use that data and what they do with it. You might have the personal opinion that it's not useful to have those, but others might disagree with that. Leave that decision to them, don't just make it for them.

Moreover, historical persons like Nixon are a tiny minority among the people who are listed on Metacritic, the vast majority are actors, directors, screenwriters, etc, where the problem you describe simply doesn't exist. If we removed all IDs if there's a problem with a tiny minority of the entries in question, we'd need to removed a whole lot of properties alltogether, because many of them include some incorrect entries (or information that others might theoretically use wrong). I definitely don't agree with barring/removing Metacritic pages for people and companies alltogether.

And I see that you keep removing the IDs even though the discussion here is still ongoing and there are two people disagreeing with you. That's really bad bevaviour on a project like this. Please stop until there's a clear concensus. --Kam Solusar (talk) 17:39, 5 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It seems to me that the purpose of an identifier property like this one is merely to align the external resource with Wikidata. It is independent of whether specific fields in the external resource are more or less useful than for other entity types. So I see no reason not to align people with Metacritic. IMO Wikidata is not an external links database. Just because Metacritic has a FAQ does not make it a useful item on FAQ (Q189293), but by your logic because it could be useful to someone it should be included. Metacritic person pages are worthless (and not just for Nixon) as they are incomplete, consist of content copied from elsewhere, and the score is an blind average.

If you're wanting to expand this property (and not in this back handed way), I'd suggest create a new property Metacritic person property, then we can talk on splitting this up into albums, films, TV, and video games. —Dispenser (talk) 03:13, 6 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Really? Your FAQ example makes no sense at all. FAQ (Q189293) does not collect different FAQs. It is an item, not a property. The Metacritic-ID property has different entries with their own IDs, some of them are people. Therefore it makes sense to allow persons values as well. The frequently asked questions item is connected to a frequently asked questions entry. Perhaps another example: connect Andy Mabbett (Q15136093) to Metacritic user reviewer pigsonthewing (don't know if same Pigsonthewing), I would similarly oppose inclusion as it is not a work and blatantly extends the use outside the approved scope. —Dispenser (talk) 13:18, 10 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Change in format for game identifiers[edit]

We've previously had multiple identifiers for each platform a video game has been released on a platform (P400) qualifier, but now all these identifiers redirect to the same place. See that game/playstation-4/grand-theft-auto-v and game/xbox-one/grand-theft-auto-v both redirect to https://www.metacritic.com/game/grand-theft-auto-v/ now. It doesn't seem like these redirects are in place for some games, with an example that https://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/arto/ does not redirect to https://www.metacritic.com/game/arto/ despite the latter existing.

I confirm that Metacritic has updated its database a bit and the links now indeed lead only to the game itself without the use of platform prefixes, which is definitely good news! Metacritic did the right thing in this case to get rid of the platform format, so I think we should definitely do the same, as we now have duplicate links which point to the same game ID (example). At this point I'd suggest to remove all IDs with platform prefixes leaving only the final URL slug, so instead of game/some-platform/some-video-game we will have game/some-video-game. By the way, as another option, we can just add autofix and the bot should not only update the IDs to the new format, but also remove duplicates if they are present (example). If, nevertheless, duplicates remain in their place, then it is not a problem, as we can then make a proper query and remove them via QS and if necessary, I can do it personally.

Regarding the new property, yes, I agree that it would be much better to create a separate one called "Metacritic game ID". I still don't understand why when Metacritic ID (P1712) property was created, it was decided to make it so broad? Although maybe because it was created more than 8 years ago and at that time no one thought much about it? In any case, it would be better to have a separate property just for video games, but as it was rightly pointed out here we are hampered by the fact that the property is used in many Wikis, so I don't know how best to proceed. Strong oppose the scheme you've cited here above. Anyone who wants to check the scores by platform again can just go to View All Platforms or All Platforms section. If even going back to platforms, then Metacritic should restore game/some-platform/some-video-game format, but certainly not use something like game/some-video-game/critic-reviews/?platform=some-platform. Also please note that you have only given the format for critics without taking user reviews into account, although in the old scheme they were shown.
