member count
number of entities that are part of an organization at a particular time
DescriptionNumber of people who are part of an organization at a particular time, e.g. members of a political party. This is primarily voluntary membership; use number of seats in assembly (P1410) for number of members (representatives) an organisation/party has in a certain body, where membership is elected/appointed and primarily not voluntary (and generally much smaller and more precise).

Allowed unit constraint needs to include subclasses[edit]

I tried to add this property for NCAA Division III (Q5284440), but when I tried adding higher education institution (Q38723) as the unit, it threw up an error, despite Q38723 being a subclass of organization. We should modify this property so that it allows subclasses of the allowed units, not just the units themselves, no? {{u|Sdkb}}talk 19:59, 29 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Sdkb: If this property is intended to be a count of entities other than humans, then the label needs to be updated, too. And I'm not sure it really makes sense to do so, particularly not by using the units feature to mark what type of entity is being counted. JesseW (talk) 14:52, 9 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@JesseW, this property already allows for units like "organization," so it seems to already permit non-human units. Such units are still typically called "members," so I don't see a name change needed. I'm open to alternative ways to structure the information I'm trying to record, so lmk if you think I should be using a different property. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 16:51, 9 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Sdkb: Whoops, I used the wrong word. The English label ("member count") is fine, it's the description ("number of people who are part of an organization at a particular time") that needs to be updated to clarify that non-people members are acceptable. As for using the units feature to describe what sort of entity is being counted, I think that's supposed to be done with applies to part (P518) or applies to people (P6001) per Wikidata:Database_reports/Complex_constraint_violations/P2305#Items_of_an_"allowed_units_constraint"_must_be_units_of_measurement, but I'm not sure exactly how. JesseW (talk) 00:44, 10 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I changed "people" to "entities" in the description. Cheers, {{u|Sdkb}}talk 14:15, 10 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Support for start time/end time[edit]

When something uses start time (P580) and end time (P582) rather than point in time (P585), this starts throwing up complaints that it's missing "point in time" and that start time/end time aren't valid qualifiers. Could this be remedied? For entities with a small member count (e.g. academic consortia), it makes more sense to denote start/end times than to give the count at a specific point. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 03:17, 5 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
