Initial upload[edit]

I have uploaded a first block of 7691 values, with I hope more to follow.

I looked for items within 5km with an exact match on the name, initially restricted to items with an identified Vision of Britain place ID (P3616) for this first block. With luck, allowing a little spelling variation and matching against more settlements, it should be possible to match a fair number more.

In all, there are 14768 lines in the 'places' file from the University of Hull, although some of these represent cross-references rather than actual entries. This comes down to 12940 distinct places with grid co-ordinates, plus a number of further 'lost' vills (eg XX0000/abegrave/) for which the county and the hundred are recorded, but the exact location is no longer known. OpenDomesday gives an approximate placing of these on its map.

The process seems to have worked reasonably well: only two values matched more than once, one because we wrong co-ordinates for Horton (Q5906774) which duplicated Horton (Q2738696), the other because SO6704/purton] matched both Purton (Q7261607) and Purton (Q7261603) on opposite sides of the River Severn. The latter is the correct one.

There are a few items that were identified to two different entries, eg Stratfield Mortimer (Q1982217) -> SU6664/stratfield-mortimer & SU6363/stratfield-mortimer, and Aldenham (Q19923) -> TL1400/aldenham & TQ1398/aldenham/. These seem legitimate. On the other hand, TQ6474/gravesend in Kent should probably not be identified with TQ6777/gravesend in Essex; but it's a lesson in what can happen. URL Match pattern[edit]

I have added a "URL match pattern" to allow tools such Q99894727 understand the relation between wikidata and the data in this external site, ping me if you have any questions Back ache (talk) 11:59, 24 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
