Needs a better description

The current description "method of measuring the value of a section of the stock market" is a definition of what a stock market index is but doesn't help at all understanding what this property is intended for. Please find a better description. --Nw520 (talk) 21:46, 19 January 2021 (UTC)

Since nobody else cared I took the liberty to find a much needed different description which describes usage as shown in the examples. However, Jklamo's suggestion in the proposal is not reflected by this description. --Nw520 (talk) 19:09, 20 May 2021 (UTC)
