Warships are generally not registered
Warships in active naval use are generally not registered by the states controlling the warships. It is possible that former warships are converted to merchant/civilian use, in which case registration would become necessary. It is also possible that registration is required during construction of a warship whilst a civilian shipbuilder is performing sea trials and before commissioning of the warship into a navy. The constraint SPARQL query is currently not complex enough to factor in these less common scenarios and a small number of false positives therefore may be returned for this constraint. (Help)

First ship registrations were only possible in Britain circa 1660

Relevance[edit]

The notion of "country of registry" is applicable only to modern commercial ships. Nevertheless, it keeps appearing on Q-Item where it is not relevant, such as

  • warships
  • private yachts
  • ships of the 19th century or earlier

Can we add constraints to prevent this from happening? Thank you. Rama (talk) 09:38, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I agree for warships, but https://www.ukshipregister.co.uk/ for example accepts registration for leisure craft and larger yachts. I think for the period a ship is operated by a national navy it should not have registration, but for a commandeered merchantman/liner, its non-military service it should. And it makes no sense for pre 20th century ships. Vicarage (talk) 08:30, 11 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I've added a complex constraint to this page for returning a constraint error if this property is used on items which are warships. It could do with some complex improvement to the query to work with more complex cases of (for example) a merchant ship being registered, then later being converted to a warship and unregistered, then later converted back to a merchant ship and re-registered. --Dhx1 (talk) 17:34, 19 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Added another complex query to exclude ships disposed of prior to 1660 when ship registrations were first introduced as a possibility in Britain. --Dhx1 (talk) 18:38, 19 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Aircraft?[edit]

Is there any reason this property can not be used for aircraft? /ℇsquilo 19:17, 4 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

use with country[edit]

There is currently a restriction that country of registry (P8047) cannot occur with country (P17). But a ship can have a country of origin (P495) where it was built, a history of country of registry (P8047) entries during its active career, and have a country (P17) in its retirement as a museum ship (Q575727) or even a coastal shipwreck (Q852190). The last is useful to tie it into the museum structure, and ensure it has coordinates, location etc. I think the restriction should be lifted. Vicarage (talk) 23:21, 8 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Vicarage: That makes sense. Museum ships ought to be listed as a permanent exception to this constraint, the same way shipwrecks are. Will be changing it. Infrastruktur (talk) 09:55, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm. It doesn't look like using "exception to constraint" is valid for use with anything other than specific instances. Unless there is a better solution; Depending on the number of items this affects I'm thinking this should be made into a suggestion constraint, or alternatively remove the warning message. What do you prefer? Infrastruktur (talk) 10:23, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for addressing this. I'd prefer the warning to be removed entirely than have a nest of exceptions. Vicarage (talk) 12:39, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
For example Andrea (Q10573107) has been registered in 3 countries. Since we have one object for each IMO ship number (P458) there should not be a varning single-best-value constraint (Q52060874), should it? Maundwiki (talk) 15:03, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with you Vicarage (talk) 15:08, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

museum ships[edit]

The number of museum ships with/without country (P17) is about the same as those with/without country of registry (P8047), 250-450 across the 4 categories. If we assume its best if all those ships had both properties (see above for releasing restriction), and as we have so few ships with more than one registration, it would be simplest to copy from one to the other. If you only wanted one, I'd go for country, as I find the idea of asserting a registration without an actual registration number is silly, and if you wanted to quote a number, then that would be best as a qualifier to a registration service property anyway, like the Historic Ships in the UK Vicarage (talk) 23:32, 8 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
