 Question Should artistic director (P8938) be a subproperty of director / manager (P1037) in order to more easily and accurately query all holders of executive positions within performing arts organizations? --Fjjulien (talk) 17:00, 17 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

 Support I can't come up with any arguments against, and it makes sense in terms of making querying the data easier. Beireke1 (talk) 15:48, 18 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Beireke1: artistic director (P8938) subproperty of (P1647) director / manager (P1037) ✓ Done Fjjulien (talk) 22:02, 7 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

 Question Can/should director / manager (P1037) be used to denote the holder of the general manager position (sometimes also named administrative director) in instances where the executive responsibilities are shared between the artistic director and the general manager? --Fjjulien (talk) 17:01, 17 December 2020 (UTC

director / manager (P1037) is sometimes used like that. Ideally chief financial officer (Q623268) is then added as qualifier (like for example in Austrian Federal Railways (Q83822)), or is chief financial officer (Q623268) conceptually different from the general manager position (or administrative director) that this question is about? If this logic is followed, one could of course argue that you could use the same property along with a qualifier for an artistic director. So my honest conclusion: I don't know. Beireke1 (talk) 15:48, 18 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
 Support The object has role (P3831) qualifier would indeed be a good solution. Fjjulien (talk) 20:18, 18 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Beireke1: "is chief financial officer (Q623268) conceptually different from the general manager position (or administrative director)?": Based on my knowledge of performing arts organizations in North America, the job descriptions for artistic directors and administrative directors (and the distribution of tasks and responsibilities between them) can vary significantly from one organization to another. Besides financial planning and control, which usually rests with the administrative director, other responsibilities such as grant writing, fundraising, hiring non-artistic staff, reporting to the board, etc. can rest with one or the other (or be shared responsibilities). Because of this very loose definition, statements about administrative director / general manager positions could be qualified with many different items: general manager (Q1210069), administrative director (Q64153444), or chief financial officer (Q623268). Any of them could be accurate. But many Wikidata users may not think of adding a object has role (P3831) qualifier... Let's imagine a given organization item has both a artistic director (P8938) statement and a director / manager (P1037) statement that isn't qualified, will this be enough information for human readers to infer that the object of director / manager (P1037) is the administrative director / general manager? Fjjulien (talk) 20:23, 18 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Fjjulien: Because of the variation in "the real world", my opinion is that it is conceptually clearer to stick to the broader term and property director / manager (P1037) in combination with a qualifier. You are right that there is a risk that some people will not model their data accordingly, but I think that the need to use qualifiers to model performing arts data in Wikidata will also come up in other places. So if it solves the issue in a good way, it could as well be used here too. Think for example of roles that people take up in performing arts organisations: there won't be a unique property for every imaginable function that one could take up in a performing arts production. A way out is to use a more general property and to be more specific with the use of qualifiers.Beireke1 (talk) 12:25, 4 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
