The origin of this fort dates from 1584. It was captured by the British in 1762 and rebuilt at the beginning of the nineteenth century, when it was called La Polvorista because it was used as powder magazine. The first battalion of the First Colorado Regiment, under the command of Lt. Col. McCoy, took possession of this fort and hoisted the American flag over it on August 13, 1898. (English)
