The genus is named in honour of Diane M. Bridson (1942–), retired Rubiaceae taxonomist par excellence who worked at the Herbarium, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. She is the first to have initiated the breaking-up of the taxonomically complex genus Canthium s.l. (English)
