There are three related items: double star (Q13890), optical double (Q3037794), and binary star (Q50053).

Currently, there seems to be a mess. Wikipedia articles about one concept are attached to another concept. Some descriptions and labels confuse the concepts or do not do a good enough job of delineating the concepts. As far as I understand it, the correct meaning of each concept is as following:

double star (Q13890) is the most general concept. It means a pair of stars that seem close to each other, either because they really are close and orbit each other, or because their angular distance (as viewed from Earth) is small, even though they are located far away.

optical double (Q3037794) means specifically stars that are located far away from each other, but seem close when viewed from Earth.

binary star (Q50053) means stars that orbit each other, so they not only seem close, but really are close.

All those labels, descriptions, aliases and Wikipedia articles in various languages need to be verified and cleaned up if necessary. I tried to clean up English and Polish. --Tengwar (talk) 18:22, 9 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Tengwar: thanks for the warning but could be more specific and tells us in what language you see a mess? I had a quick look at French and it seems good. Cheers, VIGNERON (talk) 07:34, 10 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@VIGNERON: I just randomly checked Russian, Ukrainian and Punjabi. Russian Wiki article linked to double star item seems to be specifically about an optical double. Ukrainian seems to have been fixed in March this year. Punjabi Wiki article linked to binary star item seems to be about the general concept of double star. Since those links are wrong, I suspect the labels, descriptions and aliases might also be wrong, but I'm afraid Google Translate is not adequate for translating precise scientific concepts. Other languages still need to be checked too. --Tengwar (talk) 22:46, 10 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I believe it is also important to "clean' this list because we should reallocate each star reported as "double star (Q13890)" (genrael concept) within either optical double (Q3037794) or binary star (Q50053) (specific case). Few cases can possibly be both.--Ysogo (talk) 07:52, 11 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
