First (original) name[edit]
About this edit. The city was founded in the Russian Empire. On May 27, 1794, the Russian Empress Catherine II issued a document on the founding in a military harbor with a merchant's pier. On August 22, 1794, the Metropolitan of Yekaterinoslav consecrated the foundation of the city. The name of the city of Odessa is first encountered on January 10, 1795. Thus, the first (original) name of the city was in Russian from 1795. The Ukrainian name has been used since 1920, when it became part of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. -- Лобачев Владимир (talk) 05:24, 2 September 2022 (UTC)
