Confusion about inflow lakes

[edit]

Reverts to edit I had previously made have demonstrated to me that the way lakes inflow into this river is confusing, so I (as someone who has lived near these lakes before) would like to help clear it up. Please read this from the beginning to the end before making any changes to data about lake inflows of this river. The Little Patuxent River has multiple lakes as inflows, but from a glance, they might all look like they are instead inflows of tributaries of the Little Patuxent River. This is both true and false -- it's complicated. The Little Patuxent River divides into two branches about 0.6 miles downstream of Lake Elkhorn and 2-3 miles downstream of Lake Kittamaqundi, with each of those branches being sourced primarily from those two lakes. Lake Kittamaqundi is then sourced by streams flowing out of Wilde Lake and Centennial Lake. Lake Elkhorn is also sourced by a stream which empties out of Sewall's Orchard Pond and Jackson Pond. However, these entities are not included on WikiData, and I have chosen not to change that because I do not believe they are relevant enough; they do not even show up at all on several maps.

Now here is where things get strange: Every single one of these "tributaries" is referred to as "Little Patuxent River" on every map I have ever seen. The closest information out there to supporting the idea of any of these so-called tributaries having a different name is the Elkhorn Branch Trail, which is a publicly-maintained, paved footpath that follows the branch of the Little Patuxent River between Lake Elkhorn and Jackson Pond. This does not mean that the branch of the Little Patuxent River in question is called the Elkhorn Branch though. There is another publicly-maintained footpath following the Little Patuxent River between Lake Elkhorn and Savage Park called the Patuxent Branch Trail. I think I may have heard someone use the phrase "Elkhorn Branch" to refer to the portion of the Little Patuxent River that follows the Elkhorn Branch Trail once or twice, but I have never found any documentation to back that up officially.

It is for these reasons that I strongly recommend keeping Lake Kittamaqundi, Lake Elkhorn, Wilde Lake, and Centennial Lake listed as inflows of the Little Patuxent River, and as such, I will be restoring that once I have posted this. I apologize for the confusion caused by this, and hope this note has cleared that up for anyone reading it. Thank you for reading this to the end.
