Scope[edit]

Extraterrestial?[edit]

If this is a human settlement, it is plausible that it is not only on Earth but on other planets. As such, "geographical" anything is a wrong statement. --Izno (talk) 23:05, 9 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

(from User talk:Izno) It seems that en-link doesn't fit to the item. Because many others (de, ru, fr, uk, ...) admit any object, either populated or not. --Infovarius (talk) 20:36, 10 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Infovarius: It has nothing to do with population but with the fact that geographical feature is restricted to features on Earth. It is not only conceivable but soon-to-be the case that there will be human settlements elsewhere in the Solar system…. (On a side note, no, the English understanding of geographical feature (Q618123) includes both natural and artificial features.) --Izno (talk) 19:41, 11 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think geography is limited to Earth, in the English sense of the term. See for example w:Geography of Mars and w:Geography of Pluto. The term might be derived from a word in Greek meaning "earth", but an etymology does not define a term's ultimate meaning in English. --BurritoBazooka (talk) 14:45, 15 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Historical settlements[edit]

The description mentions places where people live or have lived. Does it mean that it is used for historical human settlements which do not exist anymore as they have been deserted, merged into some other entity etc.? Aegis Maelstrom (talk) 10:21, 25 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Does it have to use the word "community", and to be a subclass of community (Q177634)?[edit]

The usage of the English word "community" is quite confusing. All the English dictionary definitions of the word include some kind of interaction between the community members. Is it necessary for a settlement?

Also, is it really supposed to be a subclass of community (community (Q177634)? See Talk:Q177634 for some problems that I found there. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 14:58, 20 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

administrative territorial entity[edit]

many settlements are an administrative territorial entity Carn (talk) 07:01, 7 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

And many settlements are not. 2001:7D0:81F7:B580:656D:D61:76AE:21DB 08:56, 15 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
