History[edit]

@Shisma, Metamorforme42, WalrusMichelel: Trying to reconstruct history a little bit here:

(and posted about it in Wikidata_talk:WikiProject_Anime_and_Manga#Model_items

Then in May 2022, WalrusMichele merged Puella Magi Madoka☆Magica (Q100772884) back into Puella Magi Madoka☆Magica (Q53353), but not removing its P31=media franchise (Q196600), nor altering the media franchise (P8345) on Puella Magi Madoka Magica (Q100773077) (at least)

Then later again in July 2022 Metamorforme42 created Puella Magi Madoka Magica (Q113367833) as a media franchise (Q196600).

This is getting a bit convoluted. WalrusMichelel, I don’t think your merge was appropriate (especially as it was explicitly prevented by the media franchise (P8345) on Q100772884). May I ask you to please discuss such merges beforehand in the future?

I see now a similar story with Hellsing, where you merged Hellsing (Q16522241) back into Hellsing (Q223155) (and we now also have Hellsing (Q112726429)). Jean-Fred (talk) 09:00, 29 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, quite some time has passed so I'm not too sure what I was trying to achieve by merging. I believe it was around the time when I was adding links to the Encyclopedia of Science Fiction for specific manga and anime titles. I must have been surprised that some items were split from just main series to franchise and sub-series as it didn't seem logic and I must have merged as a consequence. This seemed right since on the topic anime and manga there is a tendency on Wikipedia to centralize rather than to treat all media as separate instances of the franchise. I must confess though that I am not familiar with the specific conventions of Wikidata, so I am sorry if I caused trouble with these edits. If you could explain it briefly to me I will be sure not to make the same mistake again. If there is anything I can do to help fix let me know. Thanks. --WalrusMichele (talk) 12:18, 29 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I don't remember why I had created a new item for the franchise instead of undoing the merge… I guess, I did not look at the history.
@WalrusMichele The rule is very simple: N different concepts = N separated items. Independently of what is on Wikipedia. It is easier to do a merge than to un-do a merge, so merge only when concepts are strictly identical. When you have doubts, discuss it with related project (Wikidata_talk:WikiProject_Anime_and_Manga). — Metamorforme42 (talk) 17:59, 29 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
