Why does country New Zealand Q664 have a country (P17) of New Zealand (Q664)? This creates a circular reference visible in tools like EntiTree.
English as an official language[edit]
I have removed English as an official language of New Zealand. It has only ever been a spoken language and is the "de facto" official language, which does not have its own property, probably because that's a subjective idea.
To support this change, I have added references for Māori and New Zealand Sign Language as official languages. Supertrinko (talk) 02:38, 23 June 2021 (UTC)
- There are ways of qualifing it to show that. See my edit. --- Jura 04:28, 23 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Jura1: Is that the best way to handle it though? Anyone running a query on "Official Languages of New Zealand" would need to be aware ahead of time that they need to exclude based on the "de facto" criteria. By default you'd want the basic form of the query to return the actual official languages, right? Supertrinko (talk) 08:39, 23 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Supertrinko: Try to look into the semantic meaning of the property, instead of the literal meaning. Swedish is official language in Finland and the EU, but not in Sweden. Jiddish is an official language in Sweden, but not Swedish. Swedish is the administrative language of Sweden. "Administrative" and "de facto" are fully within the scope of the semantic meaning of this property in my opinion. 62 etc (talk) 10:52, 23 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Sextvåetc: As far as I'm aware, Swedish became the official language of Sweden in 2009 as part of the Language Act. That said, I was looking through the discussion in official language (P37) and can see this has been a point of discussion for quite some time and doesn't have any sort of consensus. So I'm happy to leave this as is until a wider policy is agreed by all. And you do have a point that an administrative language is in a way, "official". Supertrinko (talk) 11:19, 23 June 2021 (UTC)
