I've forked this item since zh-yue: has two separate articles for this topic, zh-yue:八九民運 and zh-yue:六四事件.
The basic premise is that 八九民運 ("1989 democratic protests", referred to in English as en:Tiananmen Square protests of 1989) is the movement which lasted from April 1989 all the way to 4 June 1989. 六四事件 ("June 4 incident") refers to the violent crackdown of the protests on the evening of 3-4 June 1989. Hence, the "June 4 incident" is a subset of the "Tiananmen Square protests of 1989". However, since the June 4 crackdown is more famous than the underlying protests, most languages have only one article for the whole period of protests, and uses the two names inconsistently as the article title.
If an article listed on the list refers to the crackdown of 4 June 1989 as the main subject (even if it gives the underlying protests as background information), it should go to Q13403463, not here. Thanks! Deryck Chan (talk) 16:47, 28 May 2013 (UTC)
- There is already an item Q7165608 which deals with the crackdown, to which an English and a Chinese wikipedia page are linked - they have very different names but both refer to the crackdown specifically. Accordingly I have moved the Cantonese article over to that item - whichever item they are placed under, these three articles (and any other future articles on the crackdown specifically) should be kept together.
- (While it's true that "June 4th" was the date of the final crackdown, in common parlance "June 4th" or even "June 4th incident" both in Chinese and as translated into other languages is usually used to refer to the whole episode, not just the crackdown.
