Purpose[edit]
This project aims to improve items related to typographers (Time frame? 1450-?).

Properties[edit]
Good practices[edit]
- Add all variants of the name in the Alias
- Add the Latin name to the Latin label
Properties common to every human[edit]
- date of birth (P569) / date of death (P570) (at least century precision)
- father (P22) / mother (P25) / spouse (P26) / child (P40) / relative (P1038)
Specific / important properties[edit]
- occupation (P106) with typographer (Q1229025) / book printer (Q40881196) / printer (Q175151) / bookseller (Q998550) / publisher (Q2516866)
- work period (start) (P2031) / work period (end) (P2032) Could also be used as qualifier for the work location (P937) property (since early typographers tended to move a lot)
- work location (P937) Some use the street address (P6375) property as a qualifier to indicate the precise address of the workshop
- partner in business or sport (P1327) Used in the broad sense when two or more figures of the profession join forces for a specific or multiple edition. We can use qualifiers to determine the role in the partnership (Ex. printer, publisher, proof-reader, etc) (perhaps too specific?)
- student (P802) / student of (P1066) When is explicit the role of apprenticeship
What is missing[edit]
- We miss the property for the printer's mark (Some are using signature (P109))
- We miss the property for shop signs & mottos (perhaps too specific)
- We miss an in depth way to describe specific relationships in the book profession (es. literary agent, proofreader, perhaps too specific) and an in depth way to describe the roles in the typography (es. proto, perhaps too specific)
Doubts & problems[edit]
- Do we create a family (Q8436) element for the principal typographic families? How do we establish what makes them important? For example Giunti (Q3107961), Vallardi family (Q4008001), Q109647847
- When describing the occupation the BNF uses the term imprimeur-libraire instead of typographer (EDIT16). GND uses often buchdrucker that literally translate in "book printer" but if your search the term on wikidata you get printer-bookseller, seems just a question of aliases...
- How do we manage relationships between printers and heirs of printers when they are made up of several humans. We could link to another element for the typografic society and use "part of" for the single human element (but the details of certain cases could be problematic). For example Giouanni Varisco et compagni - Haeredes Ioannis Varisci, & Paganinus de Paganinis
Caso limite Melchiorre Scoto (Q118516854)
