Welcome to Wikidata, AutomaticStrikeout!

Wikidata is a free knowledge base that you can edit! It can be read and edited by humans and machines alike and you can go to any item page now and add to this ever-growing database!

Need some help getting started? Here are some pages you can familiarize yourself with:

  • Introduction – An introduction to the project.
  • Wikidata tours – Interactive tutorials to show you how Wikidata works.
  • Community portal – The portal for community members.
  • User options – including the 'Babel' extension, to set your language preferences.
  • Contents – The main help page for editing and using the site.
  • Project chat – Discussions about the project.
  • Tools – A collection of user-developed tools to allow for easier completion of some tasks.

Please remember to sign your messages on talk pages by typing four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask on Project chat. If you want to try out editing, you can use the sandbox to try. Once again, welcome, and I hope you quickly feel comfortable here, and become an active editor for Wikidata.

Best regards!

Descriptions[edit]

I have assigned you the autopatrolled flag. Please take a look at Wikidata:Descriptions, in particular no initial articles (a, an, the). Thanks and once again welcome, Andreasm háblame / just talk to me 15:57, 4 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! I'm quite excited about working on Wikidata. Are you an administrator here? If not, how were you able to give me the autopatrolled flag? AutomaticStrikeout (talk) 15:59, 4 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I am, but only since yesterday. So I completely forgot to change my user page (my bad). If you need any help, you know where to find me. Also, here you can check the entire list of administrators. Andreasm háblame / just talk to me 16:10, 4 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Well, congrats on your adminship. I have another question for you: how do I link to items? AutomaticStrikeout (talk) 16:13, 4 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Just the same way as you do in Wikipedia: by putting the Q-number between square brackets (for instance, Q1 or Universe). If you want to link to a Wikidata item from Wikipedia, add d: (d:Q1) Also, this page Help:FAQ could be useful. Andreasm háblame / just talk to me 16:24, 4 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. So, does this item violate the notability guideline? AutomaticStrikeout (talk) 16:26, 4 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No, because it contains at least one valid sitelink (see Wikidata:Notability): ca:Plantilla:Usuari de TiddlyWiki means "Template:TiddlyWiki user" in Catalan. So, for now, it is ok. Andreasm háblame / just talk to me 16:36, 4 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I see. My apologies about the description problems. Just so I know, was I messing anything else up? AutomaticStrikeout (talk) 16:37, 4 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Everything else seems in order. I see that you are interested in baseball players. So maybe this gadget would be useful to add statements such as "sex" (just click on "man", and it would add main type (GND) person and sex male), "occupation" (click on baseball) and "nationality" (just mark U.S. and click on C. of citizenship). Andreasm háblame / just talk to me 17:40, 4 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm trying it out, although I'm not sure that I'll keep it. Anyway, thanks for all of your help. AutomaticStrikeout 17:48, 4 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If you haven't yet, you might want to add this property to all the items you have worked on. It can link to this item. TCN7JM 21:09, 8 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, but I thought that the item you linked could also be used under the "occupation" property. AutomaticStrikeout 21:14, 8 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
"Instance of" should be used on all items, I just learned, and having the item in both fields is redundant. TCN7JM 21:53, 8 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I was not aware of that and would be interested in a link to that info. Ok, I will apply that property. AutomaticStrikeout 21:55, 8 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
There is no link, I was just told by another user, Legoktm (talkcontribslogs). By the way, I know you said you have no intention of joining IRC, but it would probably be in your best interest to join #wikimedia-wikidata. It's much easier to ask questions there to the devs and to admins (there are a lot of them there). TCN7JM 22:02, 8 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Well, thanks for the advice, but I don't think I'll change my mind about IRC. Anyway, the requirement to use "instance of" at all times doesn't quite make sense to me. It could wind up rendering other properties, such as "occupation", obsolete, even though "occupation" probably sounds better than "instance of". AutomaticStrikeout 22:08, 8 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
After looking around a while, I have noticed that the "occupation" field is being used more than the "instance of" field for this item. To be consistent, we should switch any usages of "instance of" we see to "occupation". Cheers, TCN7JM 04:45, 9 May 2013 (UTC).[reply]
Sounds like a plan. AutomaticStrikeout 18:31, 9 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have nominated you for adminship[edit]

Link is here, good luck! TCN7JM 18:55, 19 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

And I've co-nominated! The Anonymouse (talk) 22:29, 19 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you both! AutomaticStrikeout 23:16, 19 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Didn't get a notification email. Next time you'll get my vote ;) --Tobias1984 (talk) 18:39, 24 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Your RFA[edit]

I expected you to pass, and I offered my support in that belief. I am sorry that it didn't work out as several users like to bring enwiki matters to Wikidata (something I seriously don't approve) and that sinked your RfA. However, I wish that you keep up the good work around here, and show them that they were mistaken. It would be very sad to see you go :( — ΛΧΣ21 21:12, 23 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with Hahc21 (talkcontribslogs) up above. You are an asset cross-wiki and as your former adoptee, I believe you should not leave. When you retired from English Wikipedia, the retirement hurt the project, your return was an up to the project. Don't leave on us. WorldTraveller101 (talkcontribs) 15:24, 25 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The property mascot (P822) that you supported is available now. Please help out by reviewing other people's proposals. --Tobias1984 (talk) 06:26, 26 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome back[edit]

Hey, ASO. Nice to see you back here. It's great that you're back to contribute. I've been busy recently, so I've not had much time for editing, leaving us with approximately zero baseball editors. TCN7JM 21:42, 5 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. It's more fun here than at enwiki. AutomaticStrikeout 21:45, 5 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm glad you're back here too. :) The Anonymouse (talk) 17:41, 6 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks :) AutomaticStrikeout 19:42, 7 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Retired (again)[edit]

I have decided to scramble my password at Wikipedia in order to avoid logging-in there in the future. Since this will also lock me out of Wikidata, this means I am effectively retired here. I'm glad that I was at least able to come back and apologize for the way I left earlier. So long, AutomaticStrikeout 21:09, 19 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
