several images for one Item[edit]

Hi,

thanks for your contributions to Wikidata. I noticed you are adding several images without a rank to a lot of Items. Please keep the number of images for an Item small and mark one of them as preferred. That makes it easier for reusers to find the one good image for something automatically. For more about ranks please see Wikidata:Ranks. LydiaPintscher (talk) 17:43, 15 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Ok. Will do my best, not to forget to set a rank.
Why keep the pics num small? With the ranking the user can decide if he just wants one pic - the most informative - or an overview with lots of pics. No harm for anybody but a win for people who want to see more. Databob (talk) 17:15, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The number should be small because otherwise it makes it harder for people to build applications and just say "give me one useful image of this thing". For galleries, outdoor views and more we have dedicated Properties that you can use. See for example Q64, which has several statements linking to various special images like a nighttime view. Not sure how "Give me the first item in the item list" can be hard/harder in any software or language. And the 'difficulty' to get only the first image is the same if the image list has 2 items or 20. And from my editing experience the 'preferred' image is just 1 anyway, in most cases.
My main problem with the 'preferred' rank is, I'm afraid I will hurt another editor if I change image ranks, because it seems it's largely a matter of personal preference with images.
For my use cases the rank is secondary, but some variety of angles important. Databob (talk) 06:22, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I understand. But please respect consensus that this number should be kept low and that we should strive to have one good image that represents the Item. You will not hurt the feelings of another editor. LydiaPintscher (talk) 17:25, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
