I will like to appeal my block. I have read carefully what i was said to have done. multiple accounts creation. I have never created multiple accounts but the behavioural pattern of edits might look alike because a training was going on and participants were in the same area contributing. I will never vandalise Wikidata because i know how important it is to me and the world at large. I apologise if i have troubled all administrators here who are doing a good job. I have been blocked for 8months, attending trainings and just learning to know more about Wikidata and how i can contribute better. I know your block is not to chase me away but to protect Wikidata from vandalism. I stand by the code of conduct to keep Wikidata safe as well, if given another chance to start contributing again. I have read the Wikidata blocking policy many times. I understand it and i appeal to be unblocked. Thank you for your good work and for giving a chance to contribute again. Semmy1960 (talk) 14:01, 12 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Ping @Jasper Deng to get more details about the blocking reason.
In the meantime, I'm looking at the pages you created that have now been deleted:
As I hope you can see, the pattern here of recreating deleted items gives rise to a reasonable suspicion that you are individually, or in concert with others, abusing multiple accounts to spam Wikidata with non-notable items.
If this is the result of a training course, I think the course content could use some improvement. You may want to point your instructors at Wikidata:Wikidata educational resources and meta:Training modules. Bovlb (talk) 17:45, 12 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Bovlb thank you for your response. I am very grateful that you pointed it all out. It was truly a training i was involved which i was invited by User:Bukky658. We were learning how to use Wikidata and contribute to Wikidata. It was not my intention to spam it or vandalise the Wiki. I have been attending more trainings to see how i can get better and contribute better to the Wikidata. I hope @Jasper Deng will give me another chance to contribute again. I am willing to submit myself to all instructions given to me. I am willing to grow and learn more with Wikidata and desire to continue to be a contributor if given the chance. I am sorry if i have troubled all administrators doing a great work here. Thank you for your good work and for your prompt and swift response.Semmy1960 (talk) 02:56, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Is Bukky658 a trainer? Did they reveal that they were indefinitely blocked from the project a few weeks ago and hence are no longer allowed to contribute? Bovlb (talk) 03:14, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Bovlb Thank you for your response and the time you are taking to put me through. It is really appreciated. I will get across to @bukky658. She is a trainer, and she has trained many and mentored many. She is also a Librarian, so they use Wikidata a lot for their work, She is the first certified trainer of Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom in Nigeria, she has experience, she has mentored me many times, she is on the advisory board of Wikipedia and Education User Group. She does a lot of advocacy to encourage many participants to contribute to Wikipedia and its sister projects. I have not meet her physically but i have attended many of her trainings as well.
I will get in touch with her on this. Another question, can't we have more tools to track vandalism? so that people who have made great impacts will not be shut out because we can't put a face to the username. For example, when my block happened, i was so sad, the newbies during the training were asking why, i tried explaining to them what they did but they just couldn't understand why a new contributor who genuinely wants to contribute to be blocked and those accounts were owned by individuals not created by one person. The investigations shows abuse of multiple accounts, while the situation is not the case. You cant prove you didn't create those accounts because the editing pattern indicates so. If we have more tools that can investigate further, multiple accounts using email to track whether those accounts were created by one person. Why i am thinking like this is because many of these participants some times are newbies. How do we seperate newbies from true vandalism? I am here because i see myself as part of the Wikicommunity, not just a guest that is coming and going. I took my time to study, ask questions, trying to know more about the movement. Some just want to contribute that is all, the day they are blocked, they move on whereas, the knowledge gap is still very huge and it needs all the support and help it can get to keep improving the encyclopedia so that in the nearest future it will be like a must visit for information for the whole world.
Sorry for this long message, cant we have trainings on Vandalism and how it works, the effect so that genuine contributors will not be chased away. If there is any training like that please let me know, so i can be part of it. Thank you for supporting me through, your patience, time is really valuable and greatly appreciated.Semmy1960 (talk) 08:59, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that useful information. I have requested further investigation through the relevant channels.
Hopefully Jasper Deng will get back to us soon, but they appear to be on a wikibreak. Bovlb (talk) 17:07, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

What do we do to avoid such occurrence?[edit]

@Bovlb what do i do to avoid such things because those articles created was from a training practise and many participants were invovled who are newcomers and they are happy to contribute. vandalizing the future how can we avoid the behavioural edit pattern that looks like vandalism on Wikidata while doing trainings? Are we to announce our trainings and editors invovled that are newcomers and where do we make such announcement? Is there an adoption portal for newbies who want to know more and be better with Wikidata without vandalising? Thank you and am sorry for asking many questions.Semmy1960 (talk) 03:08, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Several things would help:
  • We would be glad to know when training is taking place. There's probably a better place, but you can post a brief note on Wikidata:Project chat.
  • No training course should be teaching people to recreate deleted items. That's a red flag.
  • It's a good idea for any training course to have someone experienced with the project and in good standing, ideally an administrator, but at least a rollbacker.
  • Any training course that is associated with a banned user should be avoided. That's another red flag.
  • The two links I gave above are a good start, as is Help:Contents.

A mixup[edit]

@Bovld, thank you for your further investigations. The training Bukky organised that i was a part of it was last year, i talked about it because of those edits you showed above and am trying to explain to you that Bukky is our leader who will never break the rules, she has only one account which i have known her for, she has trained us on how to contribute and things we shouldn't do. I told you who she was because i am trying to prove that she has pedigree and she will never create multiple accounts. I was blocked 8 months ago during another training. Please a quick questions before this situation becomes very messy, cant we trace the emails? It is your word againt us, please i beg you. I have only one email account, Bukola has only one email account, the names will not change. This is the link to the training i was involved in that i was blocked for: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiGlam_Awareness_for_Librarians_in_Lagos_State. You have listen to me and i know it is not the intention of any administrator or checkuser to chase anyone from contributing to Wikipedia. Please how can Bukkola and I prove we are innocent? I know people create multiple accounts to vandalise Wikipedia. You have showed me what to do in the future if we want to do a Wikidata training, but how do we vindicate ourselves, why will @Jasper Deng listen to us when we cant prove we didn't create multiple accounts?. I am totally confused here and i don't know what to say or do. Please kindly help. Am sorry for all the trouble i am putting you through. Thank you for your patience and support. Semmy1960 (talk) 10:24, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Clarification[edit]

@Bovlb I have read your view and I understand that your interest is saddled toward the protection of the Wikidata Space. However, it should be clarified that @Bukky658 is a well known coach and mentor to many new editors of Wikimedia Foundation projects. At times, training editors might come with the risk of getting blame for their mistakes when they are trying to contribute to the free space. @Bukky658 only has an account and recreating deleted articles might just be coincidental.

When will i be unblocked?[edit]

Hello @Bovlb, trust you are fine. I am still waiting to be unblocked by @Jasper Deng. It will be a year this month that i have been blocked. Is a year not enough time to be punished. I have apologized if i have made mistakes. I am still a member of the community despite the fact that i have been banned. When will my punishment be over and my appeal accepted? When will Jasper Deng forgive me? Please help beg him, have i not been punished enough? It will be one year on the 24th of June. I will appreciate a review. Thank you and am sorry for bothering you. I have been waiting with no response. Semmy1960 (talk) 07:41, 8 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry. I just don't know when this is going to be resolved.
The problem is that your block was made by a checkuser, which is a special role with access to information that I, as a humble administrator, do not. For some reason, Jasper Deng is refusing to respond to questions about their blocks. It will be of little consolation to you, but there are two other users in the same boat: blocked awaiting a response from Jasper Deng. There was one more user that I managed to get unblocked recently by asking other checkusers to pick up the slack, but I have not been able to make any headway in your case. As you can see on Wikidata:Requests for checkuser/Case/Bukky658, I prodded a checkuser about this as recently as yesterday.
I'll see what else I can do. Bovlb (talk) 09:04, 8 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your support. I am very happy and glad that i can be given another chance to contribute. I will never take it for granted. I will be very careful while contributing hence forth. Thank you for your kindness and support. Semmy1960 (talk) 19:43, 8 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Unblock[edit]

I have just lifted your block. Most likely this is a false positive. My decision could be overturned with enough technical evidence, but for now I don't have enough data to see you as socks from my point of view, so I'm assuming good faith and removing your block. I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced. --Sotiale (talk) 15:00, 8 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Sotiale thank you for finding me worthy to contribute again. I will never take it for granted. I appreciate the good work all CheckUsers are doing to protect Wikipedia. i will ensure to keep Wikidata safe as well. I am very grateful. Semmy1960 (talk) 19:59, 8 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Please can i be allowed to contribute again[edit]

Hello @Sotiale and @Bovlb, I will like to contribute to Wikidata again but the fear of being blocked again grips me. Please is there where i can place a short announcement that i will like to contribute to Wikidata again and my account is not a sockpuppet and not a sockpuppet of another account. and i want to genuinely contribute but if i am making any mistakes, please i will appreciate to be corrected without being blocked. This will encourage me to be better in the learning curve. Where do i put up this information? I don't want to make any mistakes again. Thank you for supporting and helping me. Semmy1960 (talk) 15:11, 4 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Thanks for following up. We try hard to be a welcoming community, and it is not our intention to make editors so fearful of making mistakes.
I have a few suggestions for you:
  • Work on your user page. Tell us about yourself and what you plan to do here. Showcase your best work. Add a few userboxes.
  • Familiarise yourself with our policies. When creating a new item, the most important policy is notability. See also this essay.
  • For a new user, I recommend working on existing items for a while before leaping into item creation. Not only does this steer you away from notability concerns, but it also gives you familiarity with how existing items are represented.
  • Join a wiki-project.

Hello@Bovlbthank you for your response. I added some statement to this article https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q117288375
Hope am on the right track. We working on Nigerian Journalist. Thank you! Semmy1960 (talk) 13:24, 9 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That item has sitelinks and references, but lacks identifiers. If you're looking at journalists, you should look into properties like: https://w.wiki/6$2R Bovlb (talk) 17:17, 9 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you @Bovlb. Semmy1960 (talk) 10:54, 10 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Can we create a project on our local names for Wikidata[edit]

@Bovlb Hello trust you are good. I want to ask can a project like documentation of our indigenous names on Wikidata allowed? Names in my language like Oluwapelumi and their meanings. We add the pronunciation from Libra Lingua. Thank you. Semmy1960 (talk) 06:29, 7 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Thanks for getting in touch. My recollection is that you are from Nigeria, but I'm not certain which of the many Nigerian languages you're referring to. I don't know much about it, but I see there is a Wikidata:WikiProject Nigeria, which various subprojects. They may be better-positioned to advise. If these are human names, you may be able to create items for their use as such, which we generally divide by given/family and by gender.
You might also want to look at adding lexemes, although that is mainly for words rather than names. See also Wikidata:Lexicographical data/How to help. Bovlb (talk) 17:31, 7 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Help[edit]

@Bovlb Please can you walk me through other things on Wikidata. How to contribute to Wikidata without creating new items or statement. How to look for Wikidata items needing improvement. Thank you! Semmy1960 (talk) 06:39, 7 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I don't have much time right now, but you might want to look into Wikidata:Patrol and the various efforts to monitor recent changes and item creation. For example, a lot of people have trouble writing good descriptions.
You can also just click on Special:Random a few times until you see an article you think you can improve. Bovlb (talk) 17:35, 7 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
