Augustinians

[edit]

Hi there. RE Augustinians (Q214528) and Augustinians (Q29075) there are now lots of duplicated identifiers after your edits. Please can you check? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 20:24, 1 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Martin, it was my first time using the merge gadget, my apologies for not checking for duplicates after I made the merge. I will do this later today. Kind regards, Spinster300 (talk) 13:25, 2 October 2023 (UTC).[reply]
I don't think you can merge these as they are separate topics. The first one links to en:Augustinians and the second one links to en:Order of Saint Augustine — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 13:52, 2 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Martin, my apologies. I just now realised that. I merged two "Augustinians" IDs a few days ago based on their sameness as found on VIAF and WorldCat. I will go through these two and see the duplicates and try and disambiguate them through VIAF and WorldCat. Kind regards, Spinster300 (talk) 13:59, 2 October 2023 (UTC).[reply]
Thanks! — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 14:06, 2 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I have reverted the changes to Augustinians (Q214528). Please review and re-apply any that are warranted — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 12:54, 3 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Martin, thank you kindly. My apologies for not being able to look into it yesterday, I will take a look today. Kind regards, Spinster300 (talk) 12:57, 3 October 2023 (UTC).[reply]
Dear Martin, after carefully studying the authorities I have realised that the problem lies with the cataloguing libraries and institutions, as many of them have included the Augustinian order (Q29075) with that of the Order of St. Augustine (Q214528) in the same authority files. Even if we were to accept the main heading by which these libraries have catalogued one or the other, it will still cause problems to readers as underneath several of these main headings, the other is included. Example: if Catalonia or Czechia has the main heading as Augustinians (potentially Q29075) in VIAF, the same authority numeric ID has an "also known as" or "alternative name" listing the Order of St. Augustine (conflicting with Q214528) as the alternative name form for that ID.
How do you think we should proceed further in regards to this? Since we are ourselves a tertiary source, it makes sense to inform the primary and secondary sources, i.e. the libraries and OCLC about this mistake and have them disambiguate and assign separate identifiers and VIAFs for these two separate entities that are also understandably being mistaken for each other by their expert librarians and cataloguers. Awaiting your thoughts. Kind regards, Spinster300 (talk) 17:45, 3 October 2023 (UTC).[reply]
