Johnny Appleseed

      • 06/01/18 Edit

I believe I posted in the wrong area, my apologies.

I do not have edit privileges, so I am posting here.

In the Life section of Johnny Appleseed, it is said:

"He never married. He thought he would be rewarded in heaven for not doing so.[19]"

However, the same source says (pg. 73 book, pg. 86 online): "Conclusion: While little is known about Johnny’s reasons for remaining single, we can rule out the idea that he was waiting for a “reward” of two wives in heaven—an unfortunate rumor that was started by a novel written in 1858.34 Johnny certainly believed that there was marriage in heaven, and must have looked forward to it, but he was not a polygamist; he was a Swedenborgian who knew that true love with one partner can be eternal. He also knew that if he didn’t marry on earth, he would find his soulmate in heaven. "

Block 87.41.92.0/24 again, and at least 86.42.179.183

Hello,
In April 2018, people using the Irish IP range 87.41.92.0/24 have deleted a lot of sitelinks. After the discussion Wikidata:Administrators' noticeboard/Archive/2018/04#Block of IP 87.41.92.141, Mahir256 has blocked this IP range for one week on 22 April 2018, and then for one month on 30 April 2018. But I have noticed that:

  • on 31 May 87.41.92.140 (in the same Irish IP range) has deleted site links
  • on 2 June 86.42.179.183 (in another Irish IP range) has deleted site links.

So I think that 87.41.92.0/24 should be blocked again, and at least 86.42.179.183.
For information, I send a ping to MovieFex (who has canceled edits from 87.41.92.0/24) and a ping to InMontreal (who has canceled edits from 87.41.92.140).

Malfunctioning bot

--- Jura 13:54, 1 June 2018 (UTC)

Seems to have stopped.
--- Jura 14:12, 1 June 2018 (UTC)

I responded within 15 minutes of Jura sending his message to me. Though I disagree with the assertions about the statements being inserted, and see this is little more than yet another attempt by Jura to disrupt our project, I have also stopped the import pending further discussion. --Oravrattas (talk) 14:15, 1 June 2018 (UTC)
  • Given that the bot isn't operated anymore by the person who sought approval for it, I think it should be blocked until a new request is made, reviewed and approved.
    --- Jura 14:27, 1 June 2018 (UTC)
    • Since this is bot business, I think this should be discussed with the crats at Wikidata:Bureaucrats' noticeboard. I personally don’t see a problem with this situation, as long as all current maintainers are listed on the bot's user page. —MisterSynergy (talk) 14:37, 1 June 2018 (UTC)
      • The bot's talk page redirected to some other operators talk page. If one needs to comment on four places to get it to stop, it doesn't seem helpful. It's not clear if tool is suitable for what the operator is currently doing and they don't exactly seem to be open to discussions.
        --- Jura 14:52, 1 June 2018 (UTC)
        • @Jura1: please stop claiming that we're not open to discussions, when it seems to be merely that you disagree with the answers you get. The bot is functioning exactly as intended: you seem to simply dislike what it is adding, even though it is the accepted model across multiple projects. Instead, you keep trying to impose a political data model that is insufficient, with some vague claim that it is how things are done elsewhere, even when it is pointed out by repeatedly by numerous people and numerous projects' pages that you are incorrect. You have previously caused a lot of damage by attempting to merge lots of existing P39 statements for people into one, even though they all say quite different things: damage which you then pointedly did not assist in fixing, even when you eventually reluctantly agreed to the model. You are now, again, trying to prevent me from improving the political data in another country. If there is an issue about who gets listed as a maintainer and/or operator of this bot (which are slightly different things as this is a QuickStatements-like bot, which gets run by multiple people), then we're happy to discuss that in whatever forum that should happen. If you want to reopen the questions around modelling legislative memberships again, then we're also happy to do so, though it would help if you could actually bring some new insight or arguments rather than just reiterating your previous position. But please don't claim that anyone doesn't "seem to be open to discussions" when the discussions are clearly going on, and have also happened already multiple times before, and please don't claim that the bot is somehow malfunctioning or unsuitable just because someone is using it to add data with an otherwise widely-accepted model that you disagree with. --Oravrattas (talk) 15:24, 1 June 2018 (UTC)
        • As mentioned before, I note your disagreement with Wikidata's current approach. Please use Wikidata:Requests for permissions/Bot.
          --- Jura 15:34, 1 June 2018 (UTC)
          • You can keep repeating that all you like, but you have been told repeatedly, by multiple people, and with evidence across multiple projects, that this is the preferred modelling approach. But rather than engaging with that, you simply keep falling back on your demonstrably untrue statements about it being other people who aren't open to discussions (rather than just not open to your preferences), or making other unfounded claims. Your preferred approach may be different, but that doesn't mean that everyone needs to do things your way, or that you can block attempts to add things using the accepted model, or revert all the changes you disagree with. Please stop. --Oravrattas (talk) 15:52, 1 June 2018 (UTC)

--Suik 2000 (talk) 03:36, 11 June 2018 (UTC)

Thanks. I don’t think we need page protection for WD:PC and a block, so let me recommend to lift the protection. —MisterSynergy (talk) 16:44, 12 June 2018 (UTC)
The IP yesterday was different ..
--- Jura 16:55, 12 June 2018 (UTC)
Some more ranges are listed here: Wikidata:Administrators' noticeboard/Archive/2017/11#IPs; we could apply more blocks if necessary, since three ranges are already blocked since May [6]. The general problem here is that there is this globally banned user who has access to ~1M IP addresses (Telefonica Germany, geolocated in Berlin and sometimes Hamburg, Germany), with contributions to several Wikimedia projects for more than 10 years. The user will probably not cease his efforts here in foreseeable time, thus we have three options:
  1. block ~1M IP addresses of a big German telco for a very long time (quasi permanently)
  2. protect lots of pages, so that no other IP editor can edit here
  3. find a way how this editor can edit Wikidata again (with an account, preferably)
The user is also active in dewiki in recent months, maybe even years, using the same IP ranges, and there are concerns about the quality of their edits. There was apparently a rise of dewiki activity after Mahir applied three range blocks in May.
Right now the status at Wikidata is that IP edits are somewhat tolerated as long as the discussion style of the user is not escalating or aggressive, which unfortunately happens way too often. So we are going with a variant of #3 of the list above, except for the fact that this editor edits with IPs which makes it very difficult to track their work. With their discussion style pattern, I am not sure whether this is a good idea and whether there can be a path to an account at all; I doubt that they would manage to keep away from trouble, to be honest.
Any ideas, fellow admins? —MisterSynergy (talk) 17:12, 12 June 2018 (UTC)

El problema persiste II

It appears that Pigsonthewing re-posts comments that appear to have been made by a blocked user. It seems that this is similar to a block evasion by the blocked user.
--- Jura 07:44, 13 June 2018 (UTC)

  • The reposting user takes responsibility of any restored or reposted content that originated from a blocked user. Please provide some diffs so other users can judge whether the content is appropriate. Deryck Chan (talk) 09:58, 13 June 2018 (UTC)
    • Diffs: [7] [8]. Pigsonthewing was aware the user was likely blocked and shouldn't be posting on Wikidata [9] [10] (my edit notes) and [11] (by admin Mahir). The conclusion is being discussed above and administrators seem to agree on it. The result is that Pigsonthewing's account helps evade blocks.
      --- Jura 10:18, 13 June 2018 (UTC)
  • @Pigsonthewing: In this comment, I am also considering the discussion at Mahir’s talk page. In case a second opinion to support Mahir’s position on his talk page helps: yes, this is the user who was globally banned at meta:Requests for comment/Global ban for Tobias Conradi. The person violates Wikimedias ToS continuously, so please do not restore their comments when another editor has removed them. In case of concerns please ask here at the Administrators' noticeboard.
  • @Jura1: your first attempts to remove the IP comments did not mention the background of the global ban. I do not think that we need to spot exactly to the case at metawiki each time, but it would be useful if you could explain your motivation for the removal more precisely than in this case (you commented several times in the edit summary: “please log-in to comment/request deblocking if needed”).
  • That said, there is no point to remove anything once again at this point, as there are thousands other edits by them still live. Most users are well-trained to identify the contributions of that user as theirs, and behave accordingly in case they participate in discussions with them. If the contributions of that user become aggressive, we use the block tool as we did in the past months.
  • Please also not my comments in the previous section on this page.

Hi. Please, could you merge Betty Autier (Q55097211) and Betty Autier (Q46939177)? This is a duplicate, my mistake. Thanks. 2A01:CB1D:80FC:DA00:8DDE:EBEA:30C4:E6E 20:32, 19 June 2018 (UTC).

Hello. Can we have the anti-spam filter removed for URLs pointing to this website? This would allow the new Pornhub star ID (P5246) to work properly on items dedicated to pornographic actor (Q488111). I honestly don't know if you can – and should – maintain the filter elsewhere. Thierry Caro (talk) 12:21, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

Most likely m:Spam blacklist is preventing the link. Admins can use MediaWiki:Spam-whitelist to whitelist it for Wikidata. However, I don't know if we can selectively grant exceptions. Billinghurst probably knows better in this area. — regards, Revi 12:29, 5 June 2018 (UTC)
I know that whitelisting works on standard wikis, though WD content model is different, so I cannot speak categorically. I would not recommend it being a permanent addition as that is opening yourself up to spam. So would suggest whitelist, add url, remove from blacklist.  — billinghurst sDrewth 12:48, 5 June 2018 (UTC)
Is it feasible to permanently allow links according to the formatter given in Wikidata:Property proposal/Pornhub ID, while blacklisting all other kinds of links to this domain? We would still have to oversee this, of course. —MisterSynergy (talk) 12:55, 5 June 2018 (UTC)
I haven't tried specifically allowing anything below TLD, but I guess that should be worth trying, I guess. I'll try it later. — regards, Revi 09:15, 6 June 2018 (UTC)
I tried to add spam-whitelist, then adding the url and reverted spamwhitelist, but it failed. — regards, Revi 09:15, 6 June 2018 (UTC)
Granted an exception to \bwww\.pornhub\.com\/pornstar. I don't know why it is not generating a clickable links on the property examples. — regards, Revi 11:19, 6 June 2018 (UTC)
The formatter URL was deprecated, which deactivates clickable links. —MisterSynergy (talk) 11:25, 6 June 2018 (UTC)
Great! Everything solved. — regards, Revi 11:28, 6 June 2018 (UTC)

No, I am not sure that everything is solved. If now someone on a wiki transcludes that item, they will not be able to save, because they are 'adding that transcluded link to an article'. I am afraid that this will trip the blacklist on many Wikis (because when this link is transcluded post-edit onto a page, en.wikipedia will record it as soon as the next editor will edit the page). --Beetstra (talk) 12:21, 6 June 2018 (UTC)

-revi, MisterSynergy, Thierry Caro, Billinghurst: I am not sure why we should grant any sort of blacklist exception for a property's formatter URL (P1630) when we have rejected doing so for official website (P856) values before (a discussion about 'Carstuckgirls.com' on Wikidata:Project chatthis page (see below for link) in which at least Pigsonthewing participated comes to mind).

Also @Beetstra: in the interest of being aware of what has been said here. Mahir256 (talk) 17:54, 6 June 2018 (UTC)

I would like you all to test this.

  1. You can whitelist pornhub.com here, add that link as the official website for that subject, and the try to add {{Official website}} (without parameters) to the corresponding en.wiki article.
  2. or do this: add first {{Official webiste)}} wihout parameters to the en.wiki Pornhub page (it will throw an error, there is no WD content). Then whitelist it here, and add the link to the item here. Go back to en.wiki. You will see the working link. Then do a null-edit to en.wiki.

In short, do NOT use your whitelist for anything in your content (not even temporarily), as you will disrupt editing on ANY wiki that uses the global blacklist ánd that data. I will, categorically, refuse to follow your suit by whitelisting pornhub.com on en.wikipedia (or any other site) as that action will just negate the meta blacklisting. For pornhub, that rule stops about 10 abuse edis per day (not spam). —Beetstra (talk) 18:42, 6 June 2018 (UTC)

We are not talking about the official website here. With the current settings, one can deeplink to profiles on that website, but not directly to the website itself on top level. One would have to deliberately create a template that pulls both the external identifier Pornhub star ID (P5246) and its formatter URL from Wikidata, compile it to a link and display it in Wikipedia in order to run into these issues. Wikipedias are probably not interested to list these links anyway, but if they are they would need to add this deeplink to their whitelist as well.
We should, however, indicate possible blacklist problems on the property talk page, and it would probably be worth to ensure that permitted deeplinks to that website are not used anywhere else in Wikidata except from P5246. Any ideas, anyone? —MisterSynergy (talk) 19:58, 6 June 2018 (UTC)
My remark was more general. Care should be taken with direct transcluded content there. The indirect on is however also problematic, but much less. Often deeplinks are easier to whitelist on wikis (though an issue because all wikis need that rule), or the link can be avoided in templates. —Beetstra (talk) 23:42, 6 June 2018 (UTC)

YouPorn (Q842863)

Hello. May we get the same thing done for YouPorn performer ID (P5267)? Just in case one wonders, this is the only other Wikidata property related to erotica or pornography (Q53671196) that you'll have to deal with, as there is no other ongoing proposal. Thierry Caro (talk) 10:59, 8 June 2018 (UTC)

I meanwhile wonder whether we need this whitelisting for anything else than the examples on the property talk pages. Are you able to add the formatter URL to the property after all Wikidata property example (P1855) are removed? Can you add this identifier to items then? —MisterSynergy (talk) 11:16, 8 June 2018 (UTC)

To prevent further vandalism, I'd like a to request a block on the IPs or the range. --Jamez42 (talk) 00:41, 14 June 2018 (UTC)

@Jamez42: Also salting items isn't really possible since every new item has a new QID. It may be possible to have the name trip an abuse filter so that others can make note of it, but I'm not certain at this point how that would work. Mahir256 (talk) 15:36, 14 June 2018 (UTC)

Interaction timeline

Hello, I'm sharing this message here because I think it's relevant for the admins. Feel free to move it if it belongs better elsewhere :)

The Anti-Harassment Tools team from WMF built the Interaction Timeline to make it easier to understand how two people interact and converse across multiple pages on a wiki. The tool shows a chronological list of edits made by two users, only on pages where they have both made edits within the provided time range. Their goals are to assist users to make well informed decisions in incidents of user misconduct and to keep on-wiki discussions civil and focused on evidence.

Their team is looking to add a feature to the Interaction Timeline that makes it easy to post statistics and information to an on-wiki discussion about user misconduct. The discussions and feedback takes place on Meta.

Jheald (talkcontribslogs) seems to be using this to create countless items that violate our notability policy. Until it's revise, I think the creations should be stopped/reverted.
--- Jura 12:44, 30 June 2018 (UTC)

I am not doing anything that hasn't been established practice for years -- see eg diagram right -- and most recently was aired at Project Chat earlier this month.
When Commons has both a gallery and a category for the same subject, the long-established convention is that the gallery should take precedence for the sitelink for the main item (since there can only be one), and in such cases the Commons category should be linked to an auxiliary category-type item here, with that and the main item tied together by reciprocal category's main topic (P301) and topic's main category (P910) statements.
This is the mechanism that the standard templates on Commons, such as c:Template:Wikidata infobox, c:Template:Interwiki from wikidata, and c:Template:Taxonavigation, with usage counts going into the millions, all look to follow in this kind of situation.
Getting as many sitelinks as possible for Commons categories is now also a critical priority for the Structured Data initiative, because it is through file categorisation, and specifically from wikidata items linked to those categories, that realistically the first structured data will be drawn. Currently there are about 1.9 million Commons categories matched to Wikidata items; but about 4.8 million that so far aren't. For structured data to get off to a successful start, a real priority is to start eating into that 4.8 million, and to understand why they aren't yet matched to Wikidata items, and to match all that we can.
A crucial step towards that is putting in all the sitelinks for categories we can match to Wikidata items, (i) so that those relationships are accessible for querying at scale, and (ii) to clear them out of the way for database queries trying to identify what's left. It also means we can put in infoboxes for those categories at the same time, very worth having in their own right, but also getting them out of the way of a drive to get Commons editors to add and improve infoboxes (effectively a grass-roots drive to add data to Wikidata items to make them more complete, and get more of them matched to Commons categories, so those links and that data are then there and ready to use for the Structured Data project to call on).
So yes, I am now doing is batch runs to patch more Commons categories into Wikidata, for cases where direct sitelinks are blocked by Commons galleries. In my view this is absolutely on the critical path of the work that needs to be done to make the way ready for structured data, and is completely in line with what has been everyday practice here for at least the last three years, even if the documentation needs a thorough overhaul to catch up.
I don't see the point in this fuss from Jura, nor any merit in it. Jura hasn't raised any practical problem that he thinks this is causing, nor identified any practical alternative to what is being done. People are being encouraged now to add infoboxes to Commons. Against that background, it makes sense to do as much as we can to add infoboxes automatically where we can do so automatically, to ease the path and do as much we can by machine that we can do by machine to get that out of the way. The case when both categories and galleries are present is a particularly tricky and awkward one for people to face, so if we can defuse that for them so they don't have to deal with it, that is particularly valuable. The present batch runs are a significant, urgent, and necessary part of work that is timely and needed now. Jheald (talk) 17:02, 30 June 2018 (UTC)
@Jura1: As I said, the documentation hasn't been revised for years, and doesn't represent either current practice or needs. Example: it's still got a citation to old policy that says that Commons categories may only be linked to category-type items here, and main items only ever linked to Commons galleries -- when on the latest count, we now have 1.35 million main items linked to Commons categories (when Commons galleries don't get in the way), now by far the most dominant type of Wikidata <-> Commons sitelink.
The fact is there is now a real and urgent structural need for these sitelinks. And, as I said above, it is still the case that you have so far not raised any practical problem you think this is causing, nor identified any practical alternative to what is being done. Jheald (talk) 17:48, 30 June 2018 (UTC)
  • The point was revised in March this year (contrary to your graphic that I don't think people ever agreed on). If there is an urgent need at Commons, maybe something isn't being done correctly there.
    --- Jura 17:52, 30 June 2018 (UTC)
  • @Jura: Nope, reference 7 there still justifying the policy you're trying to argue for by citation to an RfC that has been completely abandoned.
Jura: This is where we hold structured data about things which are not files. This cannot be fixed on Commons, because Commons has no ability to store structured data for the categories. This is what Wikidata is for.
You have still not raised any practical problem you think the items are causing, nor identified any practical alternative to what is being done.
It's time to either put up or shut up. Jheald (talk) 18:19, 30 June 2018 (UTC)
So which one do you pick?

User:ValterVB use of admin tools in a dispute he's personally involved in.

Inappropriate for User:ValterVB to lock Wikidata:Notability in a dispute he's personally involved in.

Wikidata:Notability should not be left in a state where (i) it is directing people and giving false authority through citation is 7 (this revision) to an RfC that has been completely repudiated; and (ii) where it is completely out of line with current practice. This is actively confusing and misleading people.

The text I put up was clearly noted as provisional and a subject of current discussion. (Though I don't see any practical objections to it so far). It is better than leaving in place a text which is actively misleading. Jheald (talk) 17:40, 2 July 2018 (UTC)

I'm not involved in the sense that I push my idea, I simply try to avoid modify without consnsus on a page that probably is the most important page on Wikidata. Like said I waited too much, I had to avoid escalation, sorry for this. --ValterVB (talk) 17:50, 2 July 2018 (UTC)

Blocking will just make it harder to track the moving, because it will no longer appear in the user's list of contributions to Wikidata. --Dipsacus fullonum (talk) 08:34, 3 July 2018 (UTC)
User is already locked. Next time please contact stewards if you see such vandalism in more than 1 wiki. Stryn (talk) 13:29, 3 July 2018 (UTC)
User L E M G T H is obviously fooling around. His name and his behaviour suggest his intention: instead of leNgth, he named himself leMgth. N -> M. Kubura (talk) 19:33, 9 July 2018 (UTC)
