Motivation[edit]
The Kōmako bibliographic database contains biographies for 1626 writers of Māori descent (as of April 2024). The database has been compiled by researchers at the University of Canterbury over the past twenty five years. These biographic entries are useful sources on Wikipedia and in Wikidata to support ethnicity statements. It is likely that Māori writers are under-represented on Wikidata and having this identifier would allow us to compare our coverage with this authoritative database and fill in gaps. We have a complete list of biographies in Kōmako and matching identifiers already, and would either match ids using OpenRefine or a Mixnmatch catalogue depending on how many people in the NZ Wikidata community want to contribute. Discussion[edit]
- Support. This will be most useful and I know quite a number of editors who would be keen to help with getting the IDs into Wikidata. Schwede66 (talk) 00:36, 29 April 2024 (UTC)
- Support. Kōmako is an extremely useful resource, and linking it into Wikidata will improve the coverage of an under-represented group. Paora (talk) 20:38, 29 April 2024 (UTC)
- Support. Useful resource and would help improve coverage. Only suggestion is to change to Kōmako ID, similar to other IDs. David Nind (talk) 21:27, 29 April 2024 (UTC)
- Support. Worthwhile ID to support Māori writers already in Wikidata and add more. Oronsay (talk) 04:35, 1 May 2024 (UTC)
- Support. Really useful dataset. Einebillion (talk) 00:59, 2 May 2024 (UTC)
- It's customary for the names of external ID that share one datatype to refer to this datatype. Why doesn't this property follow convention and is not named "Kōmako person ID" or "Kōmako writer ID". The property description currently only says that this is about Māori writers but does not contain the information in the motivation about the name of the database and who made it. I don't see a good reason to leave that information out. ChristianKl ❪✉❫ 16:21, 30 April 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for your comments @ChristianKl. "It's customary" - is it? I'm not arguing it isn't helpful but I see plenty of widely used identifiers that don't say they are person IDs in the name of the property, e.g. ORCID iD (P496), VIAF ID (P214), NUKAT ID (P1207). Still, I have no objection to changing it, but perhaps to "Kōmako author ID", as they are all authors (I'll wait and see if there are other comments about the name before changing it though).
- You can find information about the name of the database and creators of the database in the corresponding Wikidata item Kōmako: a Bibliography of Writing by Māori in English (Q125680701) which is linked in the property proposal. I've just added two "described at URL" statements to that item which links to FAQs including the criteria for inclusion, and the history of the database (direct link here, and here, for your convenience). - When it comes to ORCID iD, the website calls the number that way, so it's defensible to follow the official naming instead our standard convention. VIAF is about both people and organisations. NUKAT is also about works, events and group of people. ChristianKl ❪✉❫ 23:31, 1 May 2024 (UTC)
- I've altered the name in the proposal - do I also need to create a redirect or is that immaterial? DrThneed (talk) 21:59, 5 May 2024 (UTC)

- Support. Keen to see this identifier added to Wikidata as I agree with the other support statements stated above. Ambrosia10 (talk) 19:56, 1 May 2024 (UTC)
