Motivation[edit]

MusicNotes (no item) is a vendor of licensed sheet music. While there are others, MusicNotes has the advantages (to us, at least) of showing all pages of each score, and having lots of metadata (which is nevertheless sometimes wrong and probably auto-generated) on each score's page. There are usually multiple arrangements for each song, the most complicated of which is usually an accurate partial transcription. It is currently used as a source in 1,763 English Wikipedia articles. Jc86035 (talk) 16:12, 5 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion[edit]

Comment I guess, the domain (musical work) is wrong and should rather be expression/manifestation of a musical work. --Beat Estermann (talk) 16:16, 5 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Beat Estermann: Changed to audio track (Q7302866) (when I created the proposal I didn't realize there was also an identifier for compositions). I think it's the most appropriate since no one is going to be making items for each arrangement. Jc86035 (talk) 16:32, 5 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • There are different versions of sheets, piano, guitar, audition cut, beginner. In that case it makes sense to link to the song and not the vocal track Germartin1 (talk) 09:06, 6 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Germartin1: I think it would make sense to primarily use the arrangements tagged "Singer Pro", since they are usually accurate transcriptions of all the vocal parts in the original (whereas the others re-arrange them to add/remove vocal harmonies and the like), and not necessarily useful for an amateur to sing on their own. The site also distinguishes between transcriptions of different artists' tracks; for example, "Make You Feel My Love" has arrangements based on the tracks by Adele, Bob Dylan, Garth Brooks, and Sleeping At Last (of which the first three tracks have Wikidata items). It's also useful where songs have lots of arrangements that are by third parties, although usually the one closest to the original seems to be the most popular.
