Motivation[edit]

The codes will simplify the disabiguation and data validations for the many homonymous rivers in Romania.--Strainu (talk) 21:34, 11 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

LE: The source represents an older version of the index of rivers in Romania - the first version which introduced and explained the classification (p. 14-16). While the current database, maintained by Apele Române (Romanian Waters), is behind a paywall, significant extracts are available in public intervention plans such as [1]. Also, the limited evolution of the rivers corroborated with the self-declared backward compatibility of the classification (p. 15) allows for high confidence over data stability.
The code is an hyerachical (VII.1.2 is an tributary (Q159675) of VII.1) and geographical one (VII.1.2 is downstream (Q15873020) from VII.1.1) which allows for easy validation of properties tributary (P974) and mouth of the watercourse (P403).--Strainu (talk) 19:42, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion[edit]

  •  Support ro.wp has extensive coverage of Romanian rivers, along with official classification codes. We can use this property. —Andreitalk 07:37, 12 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Support per motivation. --Pafsanias (talk) 10:11, 12 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Support For sure. As a disambiguation mechanism it is vital not only for rowiki. Gikü (talk) 11:59, 12 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Previous proposal: Wikidata:Property proposal/river code in Romania.--GZWDer (talk) 13:25, 12 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Weak oppose Seems useful. It would be great to have a link for the ID, if it exists. Also good to provide more examples. Weak opposing because @Nikki: had good points in the previous proposal that have not been adressed yet. TiagoLubiana (talk) 15:27, 12 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@TiagoLubiana can you spell out the points that have not been addressed? I have provided the regex format and a source for the values. The source is indeed not machine-readable, but can be used for verification. Strainu (talk) 10:57, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The motivation could explain better the source, and why this is valuable information for Wikidata. Mentioning the previous discussion would have been important, and explaining how it was addressed would be welcome (otherwise it looks shady). Also, providing 3+ examples is customary. TiagoLubiana (talk) 19:03, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I added the suggested details and additional examples.--Strainu (talk) 19:42, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Support Will help with disambiguation. --Klaul (talk) 14:00, 15 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Support I totally support Strainu's suggestion. It would be absurd to use another coding system from the official one, which, while presently maintained by Apele Române, is actually in use since around 1960. The numeric codes used are the ones for the rivers which were initially codified. The letters a...z have been added in following updates for including rivers which had not been included in the initial inventory. There is only one issue which should be clarified. There are some small rivers which are not included in the official inventory which conse1uently have no official code. I would advise not to invent codes for these rivers, but instead to accept for these the mention ”uncodified”. There are not many of them and therefore the probability of having two uncodified rivers with the same name is extremely reduced.Afil (talk) 01:53, 10 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
