Motivation[edit]

WikiProject Music has more than 50 participants and couldn't be pinged. Please post on the WikiProject's talk page instead.

I have been creating numerous items for classical music works/compositions, and very often the sources provide a notated form of the instrumentation of the composition. The property instrumentation (P870) is available to list each instrument used in a work, but that property only takes the datatype item. And for orchestral works, typically the value used in instrumentation (P870) is very general, such as orchestra (Q42998), rather the specific instruments needed to perform the work. It would also be useful to be able to record in string form the notated instrumentation found in reference sources, especially when it is impractical to record every separate instrument.
