WikiProject Applied arts is an effort to get every item about a notable artwork falling within the "applied arts" category of collections or auctions properly modelled and described on Wikidata.

The term "applied arts" is normally used to categorize decorative art applied to everyday objects, most notably symbols of power like crowns, but also arms and armor through the centuries. In many museum collections it includes fashion and home furnishings. If you want to work on a specific type of object in this category, make a subpage for this project, link it to an item about your project and go ahead! You can track your subproject by adding on focus list of Wikimedia project (P5008) to any item you want to track. For ideas on data modelling, please use the guidelines listed at Wikidata:WikiProject Visual arts/Item structure.

Challenges[edit]

Most artworks on Wikidata require a creator (P170) for modelling structure. This can't be required for applied arts, where the maker is often unknown. For data modelling when you don't have the luxury of maker's marks etc, see Wikidata:WikiProject Provenance. The main idea is to make sure items are modelled in such a way that they can be pinpointed in place and time, so there is no ambiguity with other objects that appear to be the same. For example, see this query for buckles in collections. For inspiration on the types of things that have been linked to WikiProjects using P5008, see this query for types of artworks used as P31 in WikiProjects.
