Aim and Scope[edit]

The aim of the project is to create a database of information related to Indigenous peoples of North America. Like the allied project from the English Wikipedia, WikiProject Indigenous peoples of North America, this project aims to encompass all historic, ethnic, and cultural aspects of the many groups collectively described as Indigenous peoples of North America, including Aboriginal (First Nations, Métis and Inuit) peoples in Canada, Kalaallit of Greenland, Native Americans in the United States, and Indigenous peoples of Mexico (parts of Mexico within the Mesoamerican culture areas are often excluded from North America).

The project more specifically serves to coordinate the following activities:

  • the creation of an inventory of all existing public databases that contain data about Indigenous peoples of North America;
  • the implementation and maintenance of ontologies, vocabularies, and multilingual thesauri relating to Indigenous peoples;
  • the ingestion of data about Indigenous peoples, culture and communities into Wikidata;
  • the enhancement and completion of such data;
  • the use of the data to create maintenance lists on Wikipedia;
  • the inclusion of the data into Wikipedia and its sister projects, such as in infoboxes or lists.

Background[edit]

This project has been launched in 2017 as a side product of a project by the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) in cooperation with the York University Libraries. As part of the work of this project, data models for contemporary Indigenous people are being developed. The project is focused on ingesting data into Wikidata as well as looking at ways to bring data (roundtrip) the data back to research libraries, cultural heritage institutions and communities.

Ways to Contribute[edit]

There are several ways you can contribute to the project:

  • List databases containing data about Indigenous peoples and related artistic works, performing arts, and culture on the Data Sources page. In case the databases are not publicly accessible, contact the data holder in order to encourage them to release the data to the public (under a CC-0 Waiver or equivalent).
  • Create Wikidata items for the databases about Indigenous peoples and related artistic works, performing arts, and culture (= data sources for data ingestion)
  • Clean and enhance existing Wikidata items
  • Help improve the ontologies and multilingual thesauri needed for the ingestion and proper representation of the data.
  • Ingest existing databases containing data about Indigenous peoples and culture into Wikidata.
  • Tidy up the data after batch ingestion.
  • Help improve the quality and completeness of the data.
  • Add links to related projects on Wikipedia; draw their contributors' attention to this project page.
  • Develop and implement use cases for the data (e.g. by creating maintenance lists for Wikipedia, by including the data in infoboxes or lists on Wikipedia, etc.).
  • Help write step-by-step guidelines for the various tasks.
