This is a summary of competition formats found at the 2016 Summer Olympics. Data items and properties will need to be specified for all the below data points in order to centralise Olympic result data at Wikidata.

Overview[edit]

Benefits

The benefits of storing Olympic data at Wikidata level include access to this data for all languages, preventing duplicate effort of data input across languages, and improve the quality of the data as corrections and updates can be applied in one location. For Wikipedia, storing this data at Wikidata will remove the effort required in duplicating data across pages (such as listing a medal-winning athlete's performance on an event page, a sport page, and a national page).

Further querying could automatically generate Games-level data including lists of participating nations and athletes, games calendars, lists of records set, medal tables, and list of sports competed

Suggestions
  • Suggest each round is stored at its own data item
  • Perhaps store finals data as a separate round item: so round items store all participant, ranking and performance data, with only medalist data stored at main item to avoid duplication of performance and ranking data
  • Separate data items required for each match for competitions with group and knockout match formats
  • If all events/stages/matches of a sport have dates and times applied in each item, these can be used to generate competition schedules
Questions
  • How to link a performance to a record set (e.g. world/continental/national)?
  • How to link qualification for next stage outcome to a performance? (will need to separately indicate qualified by position and qualified by performance)
  • How to store lane data for rounds? (e.g. swimming, sprinting)
  • How to store non-ranking outcomes? (e.g. did not finish, did not start, disqualified)
  • How to store reason for disqualification? (e.g. doping, false start, lane infringement, impeding of opponent, relay changeover failure)
  • How to store data on qualified but withdrew from next round? (e.g. Jérémy Stravius in en:Swimming at the 2016 Summer Olympics – Men's 200 metre freestyle)
  • How to define a knockout stage? (NB: each stage up to last 64 has a relevant data item, e.g. last 64 (Q51591612))
  • How to add details on match sections? (e.g. quarter scores in water polo)
  • How to add details on tournament seeding? (e.g. Water polo)
  • How to store data on archery 10s and Xs?
  • How to store data on the winner of a match tiebreak? (e.g. in archery knockout stages)
  • How to store wind speed data for performances? (e.g. at race level for sprints, at performance level of long and triple jump)
  • How to store reaction times? (e.g. for 100 metres sprint)
  • How to store data on competition rounds of progressive difficulty? (e.g. high jump and pole vault)
  • How to store data on heat/group competed in? (e.g. swimming heats, shot put qualifying)
  • How to store data on tournament seeding? (e.g. badminton)
