Open source software landscape is rapidly changing. An application or a tool that seems to be popular today may not be relevant years down the line. Teachers are often encountered with this challenge to make their classes relevant in the long run as well as reflecting the needs of a given period of time. However this is a daunting challenge. Both students and teachers must be aware of a choice made, the reasons behind the choice, the other available options and comparison with them. Nevertheless, teachers make their decisions considering their own expertise, knowledge of students and the available classroom time.
Can Wikidata serve as a viable solution to this challenge? What is possible with Wikidata today and what needs to be further incorporated? How developers and wikidata community work together towards this goal?
This talk will present how Wikidata can be used to understand and position the applications and tools used in classrooms to get a birds-eye view on the overall technology landscape. Then it will explain the efforts of global Wikidata community towards achieving this picture. And finally it concludes with a discussion on the efforts that need to be made to make the classrooms highly relevant.
