Suggestions, ideas[edit]

Transl-a-thon[edit]

A workshop (aimed for everybody, from beginners to confirmed users) to add label and description in their owns languages. Wikimania is a unique opportuniy as there is a lot of different peoples speaking a lot of different languages. Label/description seems (to me) both a low hanging fruit and a easy first step in the Wikidata world.

Cdlt, VIGNERON (talk) 09:55, 1 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@VIGNERON: I hope this is still planned, it's a wonderful idea :) Lea Lacroix (WMDE) (talk)
@VIGNERON, Lea Lacroix (WMDE): It seems to be a great idea and I would be really interested in taking part in such a workshop. Unfortunately, I didn't see that in the Submission list :( Maybe it's not to late to start a submission on this? Pymouss (talk) 19:13, 24 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@VIGNERON, Lea Lacroix (WMDE), Pymouss: I'm working on wikidata consumer app (part of Wiki Loves Monuments data migration), that will enable easy adding labels for monuments in wikidata. Please ping if you plan something :). IMHO it's definitely not too late. Yarl 💭  20:34, 24 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I started this. Ideas and comments are welcome to build a real submission. Pymouss (talk) 23:52, 24 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Editing Wikidata from Wikipedia[edit]

I will likely submit something (not sure about what format is best yet) to talk about the ongoing research on editing Wikidata from Wikipedia. Current progess can be found here. I was wondering if there's interest in that and what format would be best. I definitely don't want to just present the research so far, but would much rather have a group discussion or maybe even a workshop to test the prototype together.

[Workshop] Wikidata Query Service introduction[edit]

A workshop that aims to enable people to use the Wikidata Query Service for their needs with no SPARQL knowledge required in advance. It will explain helpful features of the UI and basic steps how someone can get the desired results by modifying one of the various examples. After this workshop you will have a basic understanding of SPARQL and a good picture of what is possible with this great tool.

I would be very happy to organize this workshop together with someone from the community! --Jonas Kress (WMDE) (talk) 13:18, 1 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I would be happy to help with this one! --Harmonia Amanda (talk) 13:30, 14 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I’m not yet sure if I’ll be there, but if I am I’d love to help out as well! --TweetsFactsAndQueries (talk) 16:31, 20 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Jonas Kress (WMDE), Harmonia Amanda, TweetsFactsAndQueries: Thanks, I can't wait to see a workshop run by you 3 ;) Should we coordinate a bit to decide which content do you want to put in the application, and who should send it? Lea Lacroix (WMDE) (talk) 13:09, 13 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Great idea! IRC? --Harmonia Amanda (talk) 17:28, 13 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I’ll try to be online (WikidataFacts), I’ll mostly be available in the evening (UTC), though I might be online but /away by day. --TweetsFactsAndQueries (talk) 22:03, 13 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Jonas Kress (WMDE), Harmonia Amanda, TweetsFactsAndQueries, Lea Lacroix (WMDE): I guys, I wasn't aware of this page, and I just created (now empty) submission called SPARQL – a gentle introduction to the Wikidata Query Service. I've been using SPARQL for more than half a year now, I would love to have some help from more experienced users :). Yarl ✉️️  09:31, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Harmonia Amanda, TweetsFactsAndQueries, Yarl: The submission has been improved, you can still modify it, otherwise we will mark it as completed soon :) Lea Lacroix (WMDE) (talk) 11:43, 29 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

[Workshop] Hack the Wikidata Query Service UI[edit]

In this workshop I will give an introduction to the source code (HTML/Java Script) of the Wikidata Query Service UI and then help you with implementing your own feature. I would also like to use this workshop to get feedback from your experience when using the UI and possible features you would like to see.

I would be very happy to organize this workshop together with someone from the community! --Jonas Kress (WMDE) (talk) 13:18, 1 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I'd be interested in helping with this one. --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 00:26, 8 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Ask us anything[edit]

I'd like to do another session where people can ask editors and the development team anything about Wikidata. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 12:14, 2 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

What happened/What's coming[edit]

I'd like to do a session with at least one editor to give a review of the past year and look at what's coming in the next. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 12:14, 2 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Pink Pony Session[edit]

Let's sit down together and talk about all the wishes we have for Wikidata. This is where you can ask for your personal pink pony :D --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 12:16, 2 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Lydia Pintscher (WMDE): yeah! I want a unicorn! Cdlt, VIGNERON (talk) 12:21, 2 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
:D --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 12:29, 2 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Could we break this out into two parts: Wikidata proper, and then external tools that allow us to manipulate it? I feel like most of the requests I have, are in terms of tooling around it at this point, Sadads (talk) 14:21, 7 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
We can do both in the same session. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 15:57, 7 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Update on Commons and Wikidata[edit]

We should do a session to update everyone on what is happening around Wikidata and Commons. Structured data for Commons is making progress and we should talk about it together. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 12:18, 2 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Update on Wiktionary and Wikidata[edit]

We should do a session to update everyone on what is happening around Wikidata and Wiktionary. Support for lexicographical data is making progress and we should talk about it together. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 12:18, 2 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Early reportback on WikiFundi deployment[edit]

By the time Wikimania happens I will have deployed the newly developed offline Wikipedia editing environment in some schools. It currently exists in English and French but I intend to make it available in two South African languages (mother tongues of the pupils). Michaelgraaf (talk) 13:16, 8 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

So, you have data. Now, what do you do?[edit]

I would like to propose a talk about how to navigate Wikidata when you are coming in the project to add data to one subject, based on my experiences on very different topics, with very different original datasets. It would be a step by step on how to conceive an ontology, how to ask for properties, how to create a Wikiproject and also how to deal with the data. I would like to do a quick presentation of several tools, not really as a workshop on how to use these tools but as an example of how to think about dealing with your data: going from whatever your original data is to something Wikidata-compatible, mapping that in several steps, finding exactly the tool to do each step. Most of us dedicated Wikidatians are using daily dozens of tools. I want to explain that process as an integral part of contributing to Wikidata to help new contributors to do the same. --Harmonia Amanda (talk) 18:13, 12 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Harmonia Amanda: C'est toujours prévu ? J'espère que oui :) Let me know if you need any help with the submission. Lea Lacroix (WMDE) (talk) 13:11, 13 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, still in project. I hesitate between French and English right now. English would probably mean a larger audience but the organizers are wanting French presentations, so maybe a better chance to be selected? --Harmonia Amanda (talk) 17:28, 13 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I have no specific information about the chances to be accepted. You can probably do the submission in English, and indicate that you're also able to do it in French if wanted. Lea Lacroix (WMDE) (talk) 11:18, 15 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Automatic infoboxes[edit]

Currently there're two main modules for invoking Wikidata and transcluding automatically information on Wikipedia. The Catalan model seems the best one. In Basque Wikipedia this automatic infoboxes are being widely taken for biographies and films, and the opportunities for small Wikipedias seem great. -Theklan (talk) 15:56, 14 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Theklan: Not exactly sure what you mean? Such infoboxes are around since 2013/2014 (dozens of them in the French Wikipedia, some with massive uses). You want to do a talk about lua and how to write such infoboxes? Present the concept? Explain the drawbacks? --Harmonia Amanda (talk) 10:45, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Harmonia Amanda: There're good examples in many Wikipedias, fr, es, it, ca, eu... but it seems that each Wikipedia has to make all the way around to develop it. It would be great to put efforts together, explain the possibilities of fully automated infoboxes and different experiences and points of view. It was only a suggestion! -Theklan (talk) 12:04, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Oh I think it could be a great idea! I just want to know what you want to talk about exactly. Just saying that it exists and show different examples? Or like a workshop on how to do it in reality? The most obvious reason why we don't have more infoboxes like that is that many Wikipedias are lacking good lua coders. Will you make a lua workshop? --Harmonia Amanda (talk) 12:12, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @Theklan: do you still plan to submit this talk? Let me know if you need to talk more about this. Lea Lacroix (WMDE) (talk) 13:13, 13 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
There is a need for this kind of talk. We had a discussion about it in Rennes not so long ago (@VIGNERON:). So it would be good if someone could propose it. --XIIIfromTOKYO (talk) 15:06, 13 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I could propose it, @Lea Lacroix (WMDE):, but I don't know if I will receive a scholarship to go to Wikimania! -Theklan (talk) 00:45, 19 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Theklan: Feel free to propose it anyway :) Lea Lacroix (WMDE) (talk) 15:18, 27 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Lea Lacroix (WMDE): done! -Theklan (talk) 17:32, 27 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @Theklan:! However, maybe you can change a bit the abstract to explain more clearly what you want to talk about. The mention "Catalan model seems to be the best one" doesn't give a lot of information to people about why it is so, and what people will actually learn during this talk. Lea Lacroix (WMDE) (talk) 07:57, 28 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Lea Lacroix (WMDE): Done, but feel free to change it if you prefer and endorse the workshop. -Theklan (talk) 08:01, 28 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Not at all, I don't want to endorse the workshop, it's yours :) I'm just suggesting improvements so people understand better what it is about, and the submission has more chances to be accepted. Lea Lacroix (WMDE) (talk) 08:07, 28 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
