Thank you for creating this![edit]
Hi Spinster,
Thank you for taking the time to document this case. I think it helps build good and innovative practice with GLAM partners.
Reading this document, I think the section Crosswalk, data delivery and upload method would make an excellent learning pattern, maybe something titled «How to help a GLAM partner contribute to Wikidata». Are you interested in starting a learning pattern like that? If you never created an LP, you might want to look at this guide I uploaded to Commons, which shows the step by step. I'm here of you need any help! Best, MCruz (WMF) (talk) 13:20, 16 November 2015 (UTC)
- @MCruz, Spinster: I'd like to help. This should reference Wikidata:WikiProject Visual arts/Item_structure which unfortunately is currently broken --Vladimir Alexiev (talk) 14:50, 18 November 2015 (UTC)
Re: no tools exist yet for easy/straightforward mass upload of external data to Wikidata[edit]
wikibase_csv.py does exist and is pretty easy to use, I think, though of course it's a command line tool. Nemo 14:12, 16 November 2015 (UTC)
- I was not aware of that, thank you very much for the tip! I'll dive into it. I also have some experience creating new items with QuickStatements, but don't know yet how much that scales. Spinster (talk) 15:24, 16 November 2015 (UTC)
- QuickStatements is IMHO useful only for repeat addition of a same statement (or property) on multiple items. wikibase_csv.py handles item creation and any amount of columns. Nemo 10:00, 17 November 2015 (UTC)
Feedback[edit]
@Spinster: An excellent writeup, I'll tweet it to death :-)
Some feedback:
- sec Free "In no way you claim the right to use the data."
Hmm, I can't parse this. The museum doesn't restrict others from using the data, but the sentence doesn't say that.
- sec Also literally: 'authority control' on Wikidata
Maybe mention Wikidata:WikiProject Authority control
- sec Crosswalk. "Wikidata also stores VIAF, ULAN and RKDartists identifiers; Wikidata also stores AAT identifiers"
Right, but the coverage is still very low (eg ULAN 25%, AAT 12%). So describe & provide some incentive for GLAMs to also help there. "For example, if your data has an ULAN id for the creator and you find a Wikidata entry but it doesn't have that ULAN id, please add it". Also, describe mix-n-match and
- "Property collection (P195). Wikidata also stores ISIL identifiers; via this way, types and genres of artworks are also findable"
ISIL is about organizations not genres. I don't know how many of the Flemish museums have ISIL, I'd bet that more are in ULAN/VIAF. So mention these as well.
- "Property depicts (P180)"
Mention AAT
- Finally, if you find this presentation useful, please link it: http://www.slideshare.net/valexiev1/glams-working-with-wikidata.
It talks of uploading to Commons, editing in Wikidata, and lists some tools for mass-upload.
Cheers! --Vladimir Alexiev (talk) 14:57, 18 November 2015 (UTC)
