Here is not yet any manuals. Maybe we should do Wikidata:FAQ or just edit page Wikidata:About. --Stryn (talk) 11:52, 30 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. Some short info is needed Przykuta (talk) 14:16, 30 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  1. How to edit - step by step within screenshots
  2. Often known problems (edit conflicts, duplicate items etc.)
  3. How to use it in Wikimedia projects (future, but it could be written)
3. Tutorial about how to use Wikidata in Wikimedia projects ✓ Done at Help:Linking Wikipedia pages.--Snaevar (talk) 22:55, 11 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  15. ...

Replies

  1. You can edit the respective parts of an item through the various edit links on the item page.
  2. It is not available right now, I believe.
  3. You don't really need to learn, the current editing interface is quite visual (WYSIWYG-style).
  4. Use Special:CreateItem.
  5. No, create a separate item for that.
  6. This will probably be added later to, say, Help:Terminology.
  7. A label is the main name we give to an item so that we can differentiate it from other items.
  8. For now, yes. This will change in the future.
  9. I don't think we create items for disambiguation pages right now (not too sure about this)
  10. What language are you looking for? Did you try searching by continents?
Yes, and I found in Europe only: Deutsch, English, ქართული, авар, Адыгэбзэ, Адыгэбзэ, лакку, лезги, нохчийн, русский, саха тыла. BTW xx code works well.
  11. The number is just a (somewhat) random number assigned to an item. This would greatly avoid the need of having to move pages if they were given names.
  12. No, redirects isn't supported for items.
  13. The edit summaries are given by the software, not manually written.

I apologise for giving vague answers. I am not 100% sure of the whole setup, still trying to figure things out myself too. Cheers! --Hydriz (talk) 14:29, 30 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Files[edit]

I didn't want to do this without consensus, but does Files really belong here? There isn't anything to say about files other than you can't have them. I mean, I don't think anyone will benefit from the link, so I propose getting rid of it in accordance with meta:instruction creep -- Ypnypn (talk) 01:49, 6 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Anyone want to replace the layout screenshot with File:Wikidata layout 2.png? It fixes interwiki links to language links, which is more correct. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 16:31, 9 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Bug fix needed for "duplicate" articles[edit]

This system suffers from a serious bug. I have been trying to link articles such as sv:Pseudobagrus taeniatus and es:Pseudobagrus taeniatus, but it is impossible because the system has assigned different Q-names or whatever they are called. I get the error message: "Edit not allowed: Site link svwiki:Pseudobagrus taeniatus already used by item Q6409076."--Bothnia (talk) 23:55, 15 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Translation process[edit]

I was stopped translation until renamed all related page (for keeping edit history).

Note that some help portals was created by another layout: see Help:Innhold, Help:Indice, Help:Inhaltsverzeichnis and Help:Contents/bn as example. Maybe this look better? --Kaganer (talk) 16:37, 19 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How about section 35 (project chat)? Now it forces to link to the English project chat. --Stryn (talk) 17:13, 20 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It's true. Fixed (temporary added separated message #43 for localized pagename of Project Chat). --Kaganer (talk) 17:46, 20 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Does that mean that the new Help:Contents page needn't be translated anew? It isn't fine if a translator has to do a translation twice. Regards, --Michawiki (talk) 00:45, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, the old translations have to manually transfer into the new system. We are engaged in this. Your help is welcomed. --Kaganer (talk) 06:43, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Explaining need for redundancy[edit]

I saw on Members of Parliament & Congresspersons|this discussion thread that it's useful for computers if we list both the specific title of an office and the general title. For example, Barack Obama should have "office held -> President of the United States" and "office held -> president -> of -> United States". This would make sure he showed up in, for example a search for presidents born in a certain year. I think this kind of redundancy should be mentioned somewhere in the help pages, because it's not obvious why it's necessary, but I don't know where to put it. --Arctic.gnome (talk) 17:50, 21 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Link to other projects on talk page?[edit]

If I need to refer to an article or project page on a sister project in a talk page discussion, how would I do it? For example, if I needed to refer to the "Manual of Style" in the English Wikipedia? Jc3s5h (talk) 15:14, 24 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Rant[edit]

  1. Why is this site so horrible and where is the help desk?
  2. How can I edit raw pages, if the excessively hostile built-in editor won't let me fix items as I see fit?
  3. How can I add a new site for a given item, if the "other sites" slot is already occupied by "commons" (correct), but should also show "meta" and "mediawikiwiki"?
  4. How can I find a property in the direction of "derived from", "expanded from", "related to", or similar, when the "inspired by" or "field of work" found with Special:Allpages limited to the property namespace are not exactly convincing?
  5. Where can I post stupid stupid stupid, ideally triggering an abuse filter?

  1. This is not horrible, you haven't tried to understand what Wikidata is for and how it works. See Help:Contents and WD:PC.

Documentation sprint for Wikidata during the Wikimedia Hackathon[edit]

Hello all,

As you know, the Wikimedia hackathon will take place on May 19-21 in Vienna.

During this event, we will organize a documentation sprint to help volunteers to improve the user-level documentation for Wikidata.

During these 3 days, you'll be able to join (IRL or remotely, at any moment) to work on improving and translating the help pages. We suggest a focus on these 3 topics:

We will also organize some workshops (translation tools, illustration...) to help you build a better documentation.

You will find all the information on the related page. If you're interested, feel free to add yourself in the attendees list.

We're now building a list of simple tasks that volunteers could work on during the event. If you have any ideas, parts of the documentation that should really be improved... feel free to add your ideas on the talk page, or if you feel comfortable with Phabricator, directly create subtasks of the tasks listed above.

Thanks a lot, and maybe see you there! Lea Lacroix (WMDE) (talk) 11:04, 2 March 2017 (UTC) [reply]

Edgar Allen Poe Newcomb[edit]

This is either (1) I don't know what I'm doing, or (2) the NoScript update to my Firefox is messing with my trying to edit on Wikidata. So ... on Edgar Allen Poe Newcomb, there was no problem creating a new one by putting the template on his Wikipedia page. But when I tried to add under "enter an alias", it will let me type it in. But when I click "Save", it just messes around and will not save it. So, please, somebody add that Edgar Allen Poe Newcomb was also known as E. A. P. Newcomb and Edgar A. P. Newcomb. Thank you. This is so frustrating. Maile66 (talk) 01:38, 24 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Did you try editing having disabled that extension? Matěj Suchánek (talk) 08:19, 24 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I don't understand what you are asking me. What extension? But another phenomenon, even editing this talk page, everytime I open the edit window, or do a preview, a pop-up welcomes me to Wikidata, and tells me to click to start editing. On every edit. I've been around for years. Why is this happening? Maile66 (talk) 14:19, 24 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I meant (2) the NoScript update to my Firefox. That's an extension to Firefox, isn't it? Did you try editing without it? Matěj Suchánek (talk) 14:40, 24 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yep. Turning off NoScript solves the editing issue on Edgar Allen Poe Newcomb. It doesn't resolve the other issues I mentioned below, but it certainly is the problem with editing individual entries. Maile66 (talk) 14:45, 24 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
And another phenonemon. Something odd here. On Wikidata:Project chat, I wanted to put the page on my watchlist. It won't let me do that, and a pop says, "An error occurred while changing your watchlist settings for Wikidata:Project chat". And it doesn't let me watchlist the page. And, yet, this Contents page is watchlisted from my editing it yesterday. I can add to my watchlist by "Edit raw watchlist" but not by anyi other method. The current Lafarge Case (in France)[edit]

The current Lafarge Case (Affaire Lafarge) [1] regarding terror-financing has one language link.
[2] is in Nynorsk language. Sju hav (talk) 06:53, 12 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The case started in 2016, so perhaps it should be called Lafarge Case (2016-). Sju hav (talk) 06:56, 12 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

What should be done on Wikidata about this? Matěj Suchánek (talk) 08:50, 12 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, should anything be done on wikidata, regarding a case where 8 persons are charged with terror-financing and one of them is a former leader of the "world's largest cement company"?
(I have often added language links, on wikidata, regarding wiki-articles. In this case, where would I add the link?) Sju hav (talk) 09:27, 12 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
So you would like to add the nnwiki article to Wikidata? (Why didn't you say this?) Since there is no item yet, you can create a new one. Matěj Suchánek (talk) 09:50, 12 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Q54890439 and Q85222460[edit]

Hello, there are (were) two items for the same person Kyaw Hla Aung. For some reason, en.WP and de.WP connected to different items. This prevented me from creating an interwiki from the de.WP article to the en.WP article. Therefore I merged the two items as I understood that this would solve the issue. However now the en.WP article shows no interwikis anymore (while the de.WP-one does link to en.WP and some others). When I try to add the interwiki in en.WP, it is refused with the message "The page you wanted to link with is already attached to an item on the central data repository which links to Kyaw Hla Aung on this site. Items can only have one page per site attached. Please choose a different page to link with." Is this something that can be resolved here? Thanks for your help and sorry if the merging was not done right.--Qcomp (talk) 12:54, 16 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Two articles on some wikis, single combined article on others.[edit]

P4970 in search[edit]

Hi. When I search for "number of revolutions" in a subclass-of statement, nothing shows up. But that term is set up as an alternative name (P4970) for item Q76435127. For it to appear in search, should I set up additionally "also known as" in the language panel at the top of the item page? Thanks! Fgnievinski (talk) 20:43, 22 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
