Usage note

Note that it is different from determination method (P459), as it indicates what is measured and not how it is measured (in the case of population figures, criterion used would be something like "population wihout double compting" while P459 would be census or survey). Proposal to resolve ambiguous use with is a list of (P360)

There are two different ways this property is used to qualify is a list of (P360) statements:

1. To identify one or more criteria by which the list is organized (see list of rivers that have reversed direction (Q62102552), list of vehicle speed records (Q3517725), lists of song recordings by producer (Q83788683));
2. To identify the criterion that determines whether entities are included in the list or not (see list of Panamax ports (Q6593487), list of tributaries of the Rhine (Q21000172)).

It seems that:

• This property serves case (1) much more often than it serves case (2);
• Case (2) is usually handled with another property that doesn't introduce ambiguity;
• Where this property is currently used for case (2), other properties can be used, or the statement otherwise revised. To wit, compare the two examples in case (2) above to these revised statements:
  • list of Panamax ports (Q6593487)is a list of (P360)port (Q44782)used by (P1535)Panamax (Q852387)
  • list of tributaries of the Rhine (Q21000172)is a list of (P360)tributary (Q159675)mouth of the watercourse (P403)Rhine (Q584)

Therefore, I propose to resolve this ambiguity by restricting the use of this property with is a list of (P360) to case (1), revising instances of case (2), and adding this to the usage instructions: "On list items, use as qualifier of is a list of (P360) to identify criteria by which the list is organized, not criteria which determine list membership".
