Starring --> Actors[edit]

Note: Label and description has changed after this discussion Wikidata:Requests_for_deletions (at moment, later Wikidata:Requests_for_deletions/Archive/2013/Properties). --Nightwish62 (talk) 19:52, 15 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I can't see the discussion anywhere. How will we indicate who played leading roles? And I think the correct term for the entire cast would be exactly that, rather than "Actor / Actress". Not all cast members will be actors. Danrok (talk) 22:32, 15 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
My fault. It's here (at moment): http://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Properties_for_deletion#Property:P482 --Nightwish62 (talk) 17:12, 16 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think the label should be cast member. See Cast member. That allows it to be used in all situations, see Notre-Dame de Paris. Danrok (talk) 21:21, 16 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Support renaming label to "cast member". It is sex-neutral and also allows all types of creative works. --Wylve (talk) 16:45, 18 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I have changed it now, so it fits with most types of production, and can include cast members who are not actors, e.g. musical cast members. Danrok (talk) 18:47, 21 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think this property should include only actors.--Romero (talk) 12:36, 25 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Any reason for that, and how are you defining actor? Danrok (talk) 13:37, 25 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
In movies for example other cast members except actors are covered by other properties (e.g. "cinematographer"). For a definition of actor you can see here.--Romero (talk) 20:32, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

"Property:voice actor" vs. "Property:cast member"[edit]

There is no screenplay of actors in an animated "show" (movie/series). Would it be correct to use the Property voice actor / actress instead of the one here? --Bahnpirat (talk) 15:24, 3 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Which qualifiers ?[edit]

To distinguish starring or minor roles use qualifiers - which qualifiers and which values? The all-too generic <P794 (P794)> ? LaddΩ chat ;) 01:59, 21 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

X playing Y playing Z[edit]

In the movie Muppet Treasure Island (Q1788520), the cast includes actor Steve Whitmire (Q34939) as muppet Kermit the Frog (Q1107971) playing the role of "Captain Abraham Smollett". How would this property be used to represent that? --Yair rand (talk) 23:13, 5 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Non-human actors[edit]

Maybe should we add another exception to the nature of the item for actor animals: Bart the Bear (Q809222)? Symac (talk) 12:26, 31 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Usage of this property should be sorted ASAP[edit]

An enormous number of film items already have this property but we still have no idea how to use it rendering it useless when it comes to invoking it in Wikipedia. For all the Template:Infobox film (Q6171351), we need two things: a) differentiating between the leads and the supporting cast and b) the billing order (at least for the leads that receive a main billing). – Máté (talk) 06:35, 6 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

About your question (a): a few items use the qualifier P794 (P794) to determine this ("??" in the sample of the property documentation above): Q180214#P161, Q723679#P161, Q1140439#P161, Q1765286#P161.
--- Jura 20:26, 6 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I was thinking that we may have a "main billing ordinal" property of some sorts with a number type, which could solve both problems, as it would get no value for supporting cast and an actual value for the leads. The P794 (P794) would remain useful especially with TV shows, where there is regular cast, recurring cast and guest stars. – Máté (talk) 21:05, 6 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Q21521425 uses numbering extensively, but I think it's possible there due to the way it's being sourced.
--- Jura 13:38, 7 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The property does not mention it should be only used for starring cast, but it is used for the "starring" parameter in enwiki's infobox. Currently, the Hungarian description even explicitly includes secondary characters. Something needs to be done baout this indeed. nyuszika7h (talk) 13:09, 30 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Distinction of leads and supporting cast is sometime very unclear, so I am not sure if that kind of info is suitable to be stored on WD. Current default rendering will reneder the order as it is stored on WD. It is possible to change the order, but unfortunately it is already not possible using UI (only API). At cswiki we are invoking P161 from WD as "label (character role)" with limitation for 5 (and note "more can be found at WD"). --Jklamo (talk) 13:43, 30 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It can be quite straightforward: the key is billing. If one has a main billing, then they are a lead. If not, they are not. Sure, it may not reflect the extent of their roles, but their contribution to the commercial value of the film product, yes. And that is good enough for the infobox. – Máté (talk) 13:49, 30 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe this should be changed as the property isn't just for protagonist (Q215972), but maybe it's a false friend. --- Jura 20:50, 26 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Skateboarders who are part of a Skate Video - Are they cast members? If not, what are they?[edit]

Hello, I am trying to write a wikidata item for a skate video. I wanted to include the skateboarders who are featured in the video as cast members. This is flagged as Skateboarder is not an accepted occupation for the Cast Member statement. Should skateboarders be included or is there a different statement I should be using? Thank you for any help. --Wil540 art (talk) 22:27, 22 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Label in French[edit]

See Topic:Wq93rf29llopwpys.

In a nutshell, @TomT0m: suggested to change the label in French of this property from "distribution" to "acteur". Several people (@Mith, Ash Crow, Deansfa, Hsarrazin:) opposed this change. "membre de la distribution" was also proposed as a trade-off (@Olyon01:) and received mild support.

Documentary and occupation[edit]

Hi,

The "occupation = actor" (and alike) constraint (value-requires-statement constraint (Q21510864)) is violated for documentary... (see for instance Narbonne, la seconde Rome (Q120214690)).

What should we do : Change the constraint ? Use an other property ? (in the latter case, it should be explicit and added documentary as conflicts-with constraint (Q21502838))

Pinging top user of this property @Frettie, Barcex, Beat Estermann, Oliviervd, Mbch331: (with NavelGazer).

@VIGNERON en résidence: I just found recorded participant (P11108) (a property dedicated to documentary works). I'm going to add the conflicts-with constraint (Q21502838) constraint. (I'm still not sure about people appearing in archive material who are not actively participating, should depicts (P180) be used in these cases?) - Valentina.Anitnelav (talk) 09:05, 11 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
